1997 12v rear main seal housing
1997 12v rear main seal housing
I am in the middle of installing a new rear main seal with sleeve. I have an installation tool on order to press it in as an assembly.
Right or wrong the rear seal housing was removed.
i am wondering about the best way to get it centered when reinstalling it.
Thought i could find a centering tool. No luck.
I found reference to some companies using the stamped cummins press deal for the seal but its to loose. Thought about pressing complete assemby into housing. Putting my rtv on the seal housing gasket and using new seal to align as it is pulled on.
dont want to ver think this but dont want to be here again after it leaks

Check your PMs
Post #8 in this thread seems to suggest you are on the right track about letting the seal align itself on reinstallation.

I put the seal in the housing. Trim the gasket flush with the bottom of the housing. A little dab of rtv on the ends of the gasket and along the pan edge. Then slip the whole thing on the crank with the ring tool. Install bolts.
That's as best as I can remember anyway.

Well its done
I installed the housing with a tool i had from cummins that comes with the oem seal.
Then before that silicon dried i used another tool from oni. That pressesin the seal with sleeve as one unit onto the crank. Worked very well
i did take the tool off 3 or 3 times to make sure the sleeve waw pulling on straight.
aftee it was on i loosened housing and let new seal center housing and insured it was still square to pan surface.
