Re:190000

IMO- A 90000 mile rig has plenty of life left if it was taken care of. I would check with the previous owner and see how well it was maintained. Check to see if the KDP has been taken care of, as it could fall out ANY time!! You didn't say how much tho?

Killer Dowel Pin

In the back of the timing gear case, there is an assembly alignment pin pressed into a hole. The pin is there to align the timing case to the block. Some holes do not fit tightly around the pin and the pin can vibrate out of the hole and fall into the gear train. The pin is then rattled around by the timing gears until it either falls into the oil pan, gets kicked out through the side of the timing case, or passes through gear train bending the camshaft and ruining the gears and case. This pertains to the 94-98.5 engines. There are some reports of this occuring on some of the early ISB engines.

(copied this form terms and difinitions )

Re:190000

Like MOSTWANTED if the KDp has not been fixed fix it if you buy it. I suggest you search through the 12v diesel engine and drive train section and 2 generation truck sections. There is tons and tons of info. But I will also give you links to some good sites to help you. If the truck is in good shape then it sounds like a good deal but that if the truck is in good shape. Around here it is hard to find a used 12v or 24v diesel around here and even for a good price. I have seen trucks about the same and miles cost quite a bit more. Good luck.

here is a link - http://dodgeram.org/support_pgs/diesel_ix.htm

Let us know how it goes -Anthony

Re:190000

First: I think you said 190,000 (one hundred ninety k) miles on it and Most wanted commented on 90,000 (ninety k). : However, IMHO his comment is just as valid for 190k, if it was properly taken care of. If the truck was taken care of, 400k would not be unusual on the mighty cummins before big money expenditures.

The price is very reasonable if everything is good on it.

As the others said, first of all make sure the KDP is taken care of. If it is an auto, I'd look very closely at the tranny. If you are able to talk to the previous owner ask him about the KDP, work on tranny and work on the brakes. What it has been used for - pulling horse trailers (one horse or 6 ?). Pulling TT (20' or 40'), etc. Everything else being good 190k doesn't mean much.

My $.02 worth Stan

Re:190000

Well im talkin off here. I took the time went an called the last 2 owners which scared me a lil but the first one was a older guy retired pulled a 20 ft 5th So nothing bad. He sold fora 2wd and a rodeo guy bought it and hauled a 4 horse trailer with 2 horses something like 25 ft with the camper forgot whta he said it weighed but once again nothin big Tranny redone 8500 ago so it was good to go id assume of course you have all that checked and the pin was also updated. Body was ok with some wear and tear in the box of course. which was fine cause id just have the neighbor repaint it. But as I went back to make the deal some kid as in 15 years old swung them down to 8500 for the truck *his parents im assuming) so it was gone. what a deal i gotta learn to be spontanioush ahah

It's like my pa told me when my first girlfriend traded me in on a newer model: there'll be others. Keep looking. And use this site to get wise on the inner workings of the Cummins engine.
