12V-vs-24V
I personally preferr the 12V because it does NOT have a computer to control the eng. The inj pump and injectors last longer and have fewer problems, and when you have a problem you can usually figure it out on the side of the road without a diagnostic tool or play with the key to get the codes then look them up. Don't get me wrong about the 24 valvers, they are great engs too. I am just showing my age a little here. I am sure we will get a lot of responses on this one.
The bottom end is the same. The injection pumps are better lasting on the 12 valve. The breathing is better on the 24 valve resulting in lower EGT's. On a stock engine the 12valve gets better mileage, but I cannot see much difference when they are bombed. The 12valve engine are supposed to last longer but I think that is due to lower stock power. IF you are doing all your own work the 24 valve lift pump and injection pump is the limiting factor over the 12 valve. I personally think that they are both good engines. I think I prefer the 24 valve for heavy work due to the better breathing and electronic controlled bottom end and smoke control when bombed.
I love 12 valves. 24 valves are good, and everything, but i would hate having to worry about my injection pump all the time, and lift pump. 12 valve you just drive and be happy. I also like the throttle response of a 12 valve WAY better than a 24 valve. You can almost mash the pedal, and let off before it even starts to rev. I hate that. 12v you mash the pedal, and that baby revs. 12 valves are just simple, and thats what i like. I like the 24v's. Just like the 12 valves better.

I have never owned one personaly, but have driven them often and have friends with them. They are simpler, for sure, but there are advantages to the electronic controll also. Hey, its my opinion.

Doctor.... It's ok if you were questioning me, no problem, I also did not mean to sound sharp, to bad the computer does not show the tense of feelings. I was just trying ot answer the question. My reasons for favoring the 24 is that I have so much pulling power and can't get the EGT's over 1050 or so. But with that power I am sure that the bottom end will not stay together as long as less power would.
Hey, this is a good day, I got my big welder back working again today after the water damage a few months ago, and I now have a vacuum pump for my air conditioner to work right since the commercial engine does not have a vacuum pump. It came today also, got it for $104 shipped.

Incidentally, I almost melted....I was working inside an air conditioned building and went for a "vacation" in Texas while they were having a heat wave....even the native Texans were saying "d a m n, its hot"

what do you plan on doing to the truck if nothing get a 24v more power but if your gonna bomb it get a 12v LOTS more power and its cheaper for the most part til you get bit by the bombing bug
Well I currently have a 94 standard cab and with three kids and the wife, things get crowded in a hurry. I will be using the truck to pull a boat in the summer. I have 111,000 on the 94 and have had good luck so far. I looked at a 98 quad cab up here and they want $20,000 for it with 79,000 miles. It has a whole new front end, driveline, gears, the whole deal. Was in an accident. The interior does not look like 79,000 though, pretty trashed. Thanks for the input.
I think the 12V is a lot more appealing than the 24V mainly because of the simplicity of the 12V setup and weakness of the VP44 & lift pump. Since the 24V is electronically controlled the power can be adjusted with a push of a button which is advantagous for winter driving, also if you're a fan of rear disc brakes they can be had in the 2001.5 and on. Pretty much every other reason has already been stated.
Has anyone replaced the VP44 with the 12v 7100 pump? If so how much would it cost? Is it a good idea to do or even feasible? I have been looking at a few newer trucks for sale. All are from years 99-2001. I also need something with more room than I currently have. Thanks
