12V finicky when starting

My 96 12V has a personality when starting. Pls let me know if this is typical.
Usually first start up of day.

Crank it and cranks for ~5 secs before it starts. Usually stalls if I don't babysit with a little throttle. Idle pulses (up and down revs) for ~30 secs then it levels out and steady.

I'll tap throttle to get to move and if I let go too soon or abruptly, it stalls.

When truck is at normal operating temps, it doesn't do this.

New fuel filter sched to go in today.

Any help would be great...thanks all!

What is your idle speed set at?
"Personality", yea, that's a good word for them..... Many like just a touch of throttle to fire off immediately, try giving her a touch, say 1/8th throttle before cranking and see if she doesn't fire immediately.

What you describe is common when the idle is set less than about 750-800 RPMS, and/or the idle fuel pressure is a bit low.

Take a look at the fuel lines. Mine acted very similiar. I was losing prime. not completely, but enough to let air in was causing some hiccups at start. Rubber fuel lines from the tank and i have not had issue since.

I have a 96' that does similar things, but it totally has a mind of its own. It loses prime, but very sparotically. ?? (wrong spelling) Anyway... Here the stats, New lift pump, new rubber lines off the back side of the motor between motor and fire wall, fuel heater is gone now. There are no visible leakage. Its always had to crank a few times to fire but it is excessive at this point. I can drive it to the store park it for 5 minutes and in that time lose prime. Annoying. Ive done a ton of reading. Dunno where to go next. thanks in advance. Jeremiah

If your truck lived in the rust belt at anytime in it's life, look closely at the steel lines back to the tank as well, another prime area is the steel lines out of the fuel module.........
