12 OR 24

IWANT ANOTHER TRUCK BUT I DON'T KNOW IF I SHOULD GO WITH A12 OR 24 VALVE. WHICH ENGINE CAN YOU GET THE MOST POWER OUT OF, WHICH ENGINE LASTS LONGER AND WHICH ONE WILL BE CLOSER TO TROUBLE FREE.

Re:12 OR 24

Most power potential (and cheapest power) = 12v
Trouble free = 12v
Cheapest to maintian = 12v

They both last just as long more or less. One may have something small like a lift pump that needs to be replaced more than another one... but basically the same service life.

Re:12 OR 24

Unlike SOME of our members who have taken the best from both trucks ;D the 5 speed manual on the 12v doesn't have the gear splits that the 24v with it's wider RPM range offers. I went to the GV to help out, waiting for the GSK. Winding roads that don't allow 4th gear but aren't enough load for 3rd gear killed me before the Gear Vendors.
Greg

1ST GEN:

I agree with what "Superduty" has already told you
about the 12V trucks. However, one thing about the
24V engines is the "ease" with which you can BOMB it!!
If you want 80 H.P., just add a "fueling box!" If you
need 30-40 more H.P. just "stack" another fueling
box on top of that first one! ;D To really increase
the power on the 12V I think the P7100 pump needs
to come off the truck and be properly "calibrated"
on a Bosch Test Stand.

But the P7100 pumps are TOUGH! And the 12V does
not need the "extra" pusher pumps like the 24V
when you start increasing the H.P.

I watched my son take his 2001 24 valve from a
"stock" H.P. rating of 199 up to 497 with two boxes,
injectors, and a Piers HX-40!

---------
John_P

Re:12 OR 24

Sure can't argue with John about stacking boxes to get HP. I live in CA and was fortunate enough to luck into a 215 hp engine (before 180 hp with EGR). I worry about Smog inspections. The 12v can have loads of mods done w/o any visible exterior clues. Once a wire has been tapped on a 24v , it's pretty hard to "untap" it for warantee work or eyeball inspections. The pump removal hasn't happened on my truck YET, at 412.2 on Diesel Dynamics Dyno-jet, but other changes have been made. And will be made. ;D
Hey 24v guys- when the 24 first came out, folks were getting better milage with the 4:10 gears than the 3:54. Is this still true?
Greg
