.020 over head gasket

Who's running them? do you see any negitives to it as apposed to stock? Some people keep telling me to just go with stock and other say get the .020 over. Whats your oppinions?

I've got a marine gasket. I definately noticed the drop in compression on cold mornings, and the boost also dropped slightly.

so its harder to start on cold mornings? Do you have a let it crank over a bit before it will fire? hows it differ performance wise?

not really harder, but it smokes more and it may pop a little when it's cold. It also dropped a couple psi in cruise boost. The gasket will lower compression half a point. So from 16.5 to 16.
i think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages the gasket is much more durable a marine engine is timied at 22*and it stands up to that. I have this gasket and arp studs so well see how much boost it'll hold once i get a bigger charger .

usually people only get a .010 or .020 over if they have had the head resurfaced. This allows the valves to clear with out furthur machining. You real dont need it other than for a bit more durability and add it with studs and iy should hold a good amount of Boost.

there was about .006 taken off the head. The head is also getting o-rings and im putting studs on so it shouldn't be a problem holding the boost no matter what i get. If theres more advantages then disadvantages to a thicker marine gasket then I think I'll get a .020 over

If you're going to be running lots and lots of boost, then I could see the thicker gasket being better (to lower compression), but since you took .006 off, I'd go with a .010 over. This way you're staying close to stock compression. I don't see a whole lot of advantage of a thick gasket unless you're running tons of boost.

the thicker gaskets are for when you machine the block for a flat deck surface. the head is just flat, if you take 10k off it and have the valves done it is the same as it was before you machined it compression wise. i put a 20k over marine gasket and studs on mine for durability. i am sure i will loose some bottom end. but it was a trade off.

The compression drop from going with a 20 over gasket is VERY SMALL. It is nowhere the 1/2-1 point drop that gets thrown around..... Pretty much all we use is the .020 gaskets and have great luck. The thicker gaskets were designed for blocks/heads that have been shaved but the extra material is nice to have. Personally I like the marine version (3283339) from cummins.

I never thought of that. I have just a few seconds of lag even with a hx35 but it could also be due to the porting and hogging out of the exhaust manifold I did when the head was off.

I went with a .020 over gasket, simply because I was too cheap to pay for overnight shipping on the .010 over gasket.. Been happy with it so far!
