how to tell DMF or G56 front bearing

Have 2006 2500 4x4 with G56. Just replaced clutch as thought throw out bearing going. Still have growling sound when start to push clutch down. Growl goes until clutch reaches bottom then the growling stops. Release clutch and will growl almost to top and then stops. No shops around here that really know Dodge trucks. One says throw out bearing one says DMF and another says G56 main bearing. How do you tell?

You say just replaced clutch, did you not replace the throw out bearing at the sametime?

Yes, replaced that with new throw out bearing. That is what is so confusing. The old bearing was toast. Stupidly I did not replace the DMF.

How did the pilot bearing look, was lear any leakage from the input shaft seal?? I personaly have never heard a DMF make a growl noise, ones i've seen just come apart.

bearing was very rough and grinding when turned.. No leakage on input shaft.. I have been playing with it. Have found when I put the clutch down halfway and start to get the rumble I can speed the engine up and the rumble goes away. I can also take and push the gear shift towards 2 or 3rd and the noise will stop with the engine running at about 850 rpms.. Really starting to think tranny bearing? Never had anything like this before.

I would pull the drain plug on the trans and check fluid condition. After the fluid is drained, pull off a PTO plate and take a look inside.

Good idea, never thought of that.. I don't know how much it will show. I just serviced the tranny about a month ago as part of the normal service on the truck. That fluid looked good and nothing showed in the strainer when I drained it, but I can give it a try. Sure beats pulling that beast again.

Finally got noise fixed.. Turned out it was a bad throw-out bearing fork and the nose cone for the input shaft had a ridge worn in it from the bad fork throwing the bearing off. This is all thanks to Fabian at Standard Transmission in Ft Worth.. Great bunch of guys. Did what they said they would do. In the process I did have them get rid of the DMF and went to a solid flywheel kit. They did a great job. If anyone needs a LUK clutch and disk for a 2006- 2008 Cummins with a G56 let me know. It has less than 500 miles on it. Thanks for all the input. I hope this may resolve someone elses problems

Glad to hear all good.
When I did my throwout bearing I also replaced the Clutch Fork as it had some pretty good grooves worn into it. Did it in the driveway to save 800 in labor. It really was not to bad.

If you're getting gear rollover sounds, use Delvac 50 for fluid.
