Brought truck in to fix Death Wobble and found another problem.

My truck has 53K on it with original tires and no leveling kit. My truck exhibited the wobble about a week ago. This is not a small vibration but it feels as if you are inside a paint shaker. I bring it in the shop for routine fluid changes and the front end fix. They call me and tell me they found the problem and that my rear differential is FUBAR. He asks me if I tow a boat because there is rust on the inside of the cover and the fluid is milky. I have never forged any water in this truck. So what gives. Anyone else have water enter the rear diff. w/o any hint of a leak from the rear?

If water could get in ,oil would come out. How does the affect a shimmy.

Unless the water came in through the vent tube if the truck was in some high water....

Has the rear fluid ever been changed?
The fluid that comes from the factory is milky to begin with. I dropped the fluid at 15k miles and it was nasty. Switched to RP 75w-140 and now with 20k it's still clean looking.

My son in law towed a trailer back from Va a few weeks ago with his 01 (gas) when he returned he had a load nasty growl going on and thought at first it was in the tranny. ended up being rear axle bearings and pinion gear. when they opened his differential it was nasty brown rusty -----make a long story short there is supposed to be a valve in the vent tube that was gone and mecanic said without it he could have picked water up just driving in the rain

Or my favorite a dirt dobber or the like decides that vent tube is a nice home and blocks all air... Now oil is either pushed out or water debris is sucked in the axle...

I can see it launching a boat. Hot differential, cold lake, everything is going to contract at once when it comes in contact with the water. I guess I have to start checking to see if my valve is there and will it still suck up water when I,m at a steep boat launch. Thanks for the heads up.
