Whenever it makes the clunk sound have someone hit it with a hammer while you crank it.

You can have the starter rebuilt. I would not suggest goin to Dodge for it, Just went though the same problem, Dodge is 600$ for me(work a dealer) and for a guy on the street is 880$ for a new starter. I went to a local shop here and they beefed it up and rebuilt it for 86$ out the door. But also you could pull it apart and try cleaning the contacts on your own. But that is just goin to give you some more time before the time comes to get it replaced/ rebuilt.

It's the contacts. You can replace them yourself, there's a thread about it in the sticky.

The starter on the slant six in my '78 started doing that years ago and I haven't ever fixed it, since it always started eventually...although eventually it probably wouldn't have.

$880 for a starter is ridiculous. NAPA has rebuilt ones for $219 and you can probably get them done cheaper at a local place.
