Kids Enroute-starter going out-quality source?

Kids are headed home for Christmas today...crossing the snowy Washington Cascade mountains as I write this. They just called and said the starter is going out on their '96 2500 4WD Cummins. (c. 180K miles) I suspect they won't shut her off 'till they get here. Now I think they might be here a couple days longer than expected with Xmas snow and parts houses closed for holiday.

Who is the quality source for the highly recommended heavy duty starter contacts? I have it buried in my files somewhere. I remember thinking when mine goes in my '97 CTD, I'm going to buy one of their NEW starters where they already install the new contacts. I seem to recall it is a foreign mfg.'d starter, but supposed to be very good. I hate to see the kids just go down to NAPA and get a Romaine Electric rebuild, (etc.), but then..........

Additionally, how have some of you handled on-road starter outages?

Dennis

This is indeed the best source. You are correct to be wary of knock off starters. If the starter is just not always engaging, you probably only need new contacts and not a whole new starter. It really isn't any harder than putting in a new starter since the hard part is breaking the bolts loose. Make sure you have a good 10mm wrench.

See if you can find a good starter/alternator shop in town, I know there is one 20 minutes from where I live that stocks the contacts.

It is quite easy to do.
