Believe me, I went through all of that. With the stock setup, mine was studdering and missing when i free revved it over 3200rpm or so, and under load it would studder anything over 2800-3000rpm and not sound smooth.

Well, so first i thought it was timing. Timed it at 16*. Still not really any better other than the EGT's. So then i thought i must have low fuel pressure. Checked the pressure, and it looked ok. Shimmed my overflow valve(even though it was new) for more pressure, and that helped some, but not much. So then I put a new factory lift pump on it, and it helped a little too, but not really enough to write home about. Finally talked to a boy that was pulling a 95 5 speed truck with a 160 pump. I saw it had the same problem as mine and then noticed when they changed some things but still had the original injection pump that it was revving really smooth. I talked to him and he said after they put an aftermarket lift pump on the truck it was fine.

So, I bought a Carter 4601hp 100gph lift pump from jegs, and plumed it in on the frame rail. It pushes through the stock lift pump, and now it is MUCH better. It still studders over about 3500rpm in gear, but it is smooth up to that point, and it will free rev to 4100rpm or so really smooth. I think removing the stock lift pump and either running the carter or an airdog or fass alone would be the best bet, but i dont want to spend the $$ on an Air Dog or Raptor pump, and i dont totally trust an electric lift pump, so this setup has been working really good for me so far.

Sorry its so long, but i hope this will help you know what to do because no one could really help me with it at the time. Maybe you wont have to chase so many things to fix yours! Although i would reccomend bumping the timing because that will help too.

replaced everything you mentioned so its already too late...
i thought it was normal because all the modified 12 valves here do the exact same thing. 2800-3000 full throttle mine seems to kinda cut out so i shift. it could be alot faster if i could rev it to 3200 THEN shift

Yep, I was about to just put a 180 or 215 pump on my truck and forget it because they dont seem to have that problem even with the stock supply pump because they run a different cam in the pump. Then i finally figured out the fix

As you can see, mine revs pretty good. If you can afford an AirDog, that would be a good way to go, but if not, the carter is only $100, and pretty easy to install, and worked great for me.

My '96 breaks up if you free rev it under full throttle and puts out a little white smoke it also seems low on power on the road. I have done the over flow valve, replaced fuel lines, lift pump, fuel filters and pre filter/heater. An in-line pump could be a good thing to try. It wants more fuel for sure .I was starting to think injectors and /or timing maybe even cranking up the pump a little. I will check the timing then order a extra inline pump. If it didn't work I could alway pull it and save it for a spare behind the seat in a pinch.

I would check the timing first in your case, and possibly bump it to 15* or so. Then if that doesent help you out, a pusher pump might just do the trick

YoungGuns- Thanks for the compliment on the looks of the truck. Unfortunately it looks better on camera than right up on it The roof has a lot of paint peeling off of it, and it has some pretty bad rust on the bottom of the drivers door, and the rear fender wells are starting to bubble. Oh well, it'll be a pulling truck one of these days anyways, and it wont matter then
