My oil Analysis

What do you think for the factory oil at 1100 miles?

With that silicon number, I would be changing the oil NOW.

Crabjoe, pm me if you want help interpreting your results. First of all, I hate to say but you kinda wasted your money because an oil analysis with 1100 miles won't tell you anything. I wouldn't recomment testing until you've hit about 15-20k miles, and wear patterns have normalized. Everything looks fine though. Make sure the next time you test that you get a TBN test done as well, very important.

Nevada, don't worry, all new engines as a function of breaking in have high silicon levels for the first 10-15k. It goes away, it's not from an induction leak or dirty filter

Lightman, is getting the TBN a special request when doing oil analysis? I would think that would be a standard reporting feature. Do they main current stats on various oils to baseline too for the first time, or should you send in a clean sample as well? Or isn't it even necessary?

I agree about the silicon levels, the comments section even reports that this engine will look even better after a couple of drain intervals.

Been thinking of mailing in sample after about 4-5 thousand on the oil and just before I go to swap out the oil filter.

Thanks.

Your analysis looks similar to mine. I also checked mine a little bit early too ( 5100 Mi)but I mainly wanted to see that there was no coolant traces and how longer idle periods I have had to do lately added to the fuel in oil situation. Both of which turned out way better than I expected.
The actual "clean" look of the oil when I got the sample was unbelievable.

I wouldn't worry too much about the higher than expected silicon levels with a new build engine thats probably the result of RTV sealers being used in assembly and from casting of the block.

Wow thats funny, I just now noticed the comments section on the oil analysis! Glad it agrees with me

Bulabula - TBN is not really used as much in gasoline oil analysis reports, so many labs offer their basic oil analysis package without it for a few bucks cheaper. Usually you just have to specifiy. I think at avlube a reg test is 15 and tbn 18 maybe? Doing a test on virgin oil isn't really necessary IMO. Just do a little research on your oil of choice. For example, I already KNOW delvac 1 has a TBN of 12, so I can gauge that the oil is relatively shot when the TBN reaches 6. Running to half the original TBN is about the optimum extended drain interval, provided all other areas are in check. My thoughts are that as clean/soot free as this engine runs, TBN or wear metals will be the determining factor in the drain interval.

I wouldn't recommend sampling till at least 15k. Oil sampling is done to watch trends, help determine the proper drain interval, and to see if anything is terribly out of order. Your engine won't develop normal wear patterns till at least 15-20k, which is the exact reason that cummins wants you to wait to switch to synthetic.

Post Very typical number for a break in period

I've had a few folks get their oil checked at very low miles that had my air intake on and its going to read very much like this until you have like Lightman said...20K or more on the engine.

I hope that this makes it a bit more clear that its very normal for these results at this mileage.

The potassium is from coolant and probably from when the engine was assembled.
I hope some of the folks that have these levels will breathe easier knowing its from break in, not from anything else.

I see that the analysis statement is similar to my comments.

All is well and right on schedule. Thanks for posting your results.

I didn't pull the TBN because with only 1100 miles on the oil and new oil going in, I figured the TBN wouldn't make any difference. If I hadn't changed the oil out, then I would have gotten the TBN. I'm planning on changing the current oil when the oil gets around 3000 miles and having the oil analized again.

Well that's cool CJ, it's your truck and money, do whatcha like You won't get any meaningful results till at least 15-20k, when you can start watching trends to determine proper interval.
