I haven't heard or read anywhere that uses the term recommended. I have read on Cummins.com that states the average life to overhaul is 350,000 miles. In the 90's it was 400,000. Proper maintenance is the key. Many thousands of 5.9's go over a million miles without needing anything major.

Sorry, don't know the cost.

Phone your local cummins dealer. They would be able to provide a cost.
Also depends on how much of a rebuild is required (only bearings, pistons and rings, new or reman head etc.

A LOT of $! Most of the REAL high mileage trucks I had come through the D.C. dealer I worked for had low mileage USED engines in them.Saw some but never a rebuild.Eaither needed a motor and truck got parted out or a used engine was installed. Some first generations guys have posted about getting theres rebuilt not many but a few.Lots of BUCKS.Some of the 400k up motors that ran ok and got torn down were BADLY worn.Bore, crank, valve guides etc.

Why rebuild when you can buy brand new takeouts for $5000. Sell your old engine to someone who wants to rebuild it and it might only cost $3K to fix a worn our engine.

Drooool.... maybe my 325/600 will be wore out in a few years and I could upgrade to a 6.7L engine. Highly doubtful given the few miles I drive my truck !

unless you're a hotshotter you'll probably never need to rebuild, engine will outlast the truck.

I have seen gas engines with 700,000 (a 300 six Ford)and still running so I find it hard to believe you can wear a Cummins out with only 350,ooo on them . What ever oil they were running would probaly give some answers and how often it was changed . I guess with misuse it could happen , if you can't pay the dime don't fill it with slime . My last Ford with a 5.8 had over 300,000 on it and was still going strong and it is far very far from the class of a Cummins . At 350,000 I plan on being only 1/3 of the way to a overhaul , if I didn't I would not be driving it .

Ebay has new brand new crate 03's for 4700.
They are not take outs, they are Cummins factory new.

My 92 5.7 Silverado gas truck has 400k on it, and it's still running fine, I'd be real ****** if my Cummins didn't get 800k..

We can't have it both ways.If the average is 350K and some are going 400 and 500k,that means some bit the dust at 150k.I believe that most with proper scheduled maintentance and used as designed(not drag racing and hooking up and sled pulling)should go 350k. There will always be some who go much farther and the same amount that die young. 800K is certainly possible, but I'd say the chances are slim and none and slim could walk out the door.

I think that 350K average is in industrial use, like a FL70, when they used to use ISBs.

In a pickup truck, where the average HP output is probably 40 HP, an ISB should last a long time. I've seen IH466 engines with 5000 hours on them in combines where they are run at max power ALL the time. A 5.9 isn't built as heavy, but at 40HP, they will probably literally last forever.

I'd be more worried about dust getting into the engine (air filter) or someone not changing oil in it than anything. Or a leaking injector washing down a cylinder.

And the B50 number of 350,000 miles doesn't mean the engine needed overhaul, just that either the pan or head needed to be pulled. I can see the head of an ISB needing work after 350,000 miles in an FL70 or F750 operated a high loads.

I use 40HP because cruising around town the engine is probably making an average of 20HP, probably 45-50HP on the highway and 180HP towing on the highway.

If an ISB can get 350,000 miles in a school bus before it needs head work, it is going to last practically forever in a pickup truck. Better hope you don't tire of the color.

Think of how many other things will wear out before the engine. Seats, tires, brakes, wheel bearings, springs ?, transmission. Rear end ? Paint ?

I think it is really cool to see a sharp looking 1st gen running around. Yah just know the odometer on it has gone around a few times and the engine is still good for a lot more miles.
