What's up with the search function on this site?

Giving me problems . Now it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Just flashes and returns back to the search page.

Just an FYI to let you know of any bugs!

Put at least 4 characters in your search. It's going back to that page because you're under the amount of characters in your search term.

355/65/18 is what I'm looking for. Still not working.

I guess tire sizes are hard to search.

I found that if I was still within the 60second limit it would not give me the error message any more "must wait 60 sec..." instead it just returns me to the search page... This is when searching user names.. (easier to find my threads that way).....

I have a bug open on it with the software company. Still working on it. I'm most likely going to have to change the search engine back to the way it was because it's causing table locking now, and it's not as fast as the old way. We THOUGHT it was going to be faster based on reviews we received this new way but it's not, and it's causing problems like the one being discussed here. If you guys want to track this issue, you can do so by clicking here:

Thanks Jack... I just noticed there was a section to report bugs.

Search has been a pain because once you get over about a million posts, it really starts to bog down the site when big searches are performed. Now that we're close to 1.5 million posts, it's getting worse and the only way to REALLY fix it is to separate the search function on to it's own server so that we can free up the forums for posting. I don't care if the tables get locked down on a duplicated database because it doesn't affect the surfing experience that way.

Growth is good, but in a way, we're a victim of our own growth because it's been tremendous. The good news is that there are plans in the works to alleviate these issues and once they are in place, you'll notice a difference. Even though the site works well now, I'm fairly **** about making it better in terms of the user experience.

Two years ago, we were running on a little pizza box. Right now, we're running on a total of four servers and I would say that by years end, we'll be running on about 10.

Some of the things that will be split.

1. Ads will be on their own server. They account for a large load.
2. Search will be split onto it's own server and at the same time, the db will be replicated there twice a day. It'll also serve as a backup machine.
3. The actual web servers will increase from 2 to 4
4. Load balancing will be changed from round robin to least connections. This means that the load balancers will search for the least busy server instead of just spreading the load from 1 thru 4 and then back again.
5. Photos will most likely be moved to their own server.
6. Increase capacity for db servers moving from Dell 2850's to Sun T2000's running SunOS with MySql. From what I understand, coolthreads works well with MySql but I'm still doing research.

More information to come but that's what we're looking at for now. Don't think we're not listening, because we are, and we're working hard to keep up with the huge traffic growth here.

That's because I just reset the apache process to make some changes take effect. I had it down for about 10-20 seconds.

Thanks for listening. Hope they can find a way to safe guard it a little better so you can take down the 60 second wait on the search function.

Actually, that'll never go away no matter how robust the search function is in the future. Keeping that in place helps keep us from getting slammed by automated bots and other things that'll go in there and just keep hitting it over and over until it finally brings down the server. No matter how fast it is in the future, we'll always take safeguards from DOS and other attacks.

Jack, do you ever stop and wonder what you got yourself into? This sounds like more than a full time job. Your hard work is appreciated.

hahha, yes, more often now than ever, but it's worth it. I never knew this thing would get to where it is now given the fact that I started it with a single piece of junk machine that sat in my office on a non protected piece of software. A lot has changed since then, and yes, it has been a full-time job for sure. But again, it's worth it. I just hope that we'll continue to educate those out there who are new to diesels, and help those who have a lot of experience. You can never learn too much.

Thanks for the compliment, it is appreciated by the whole team, which is also going to grow in the future, I hope!
