What's an Allison 6 spd conversion cost?

I did a search and found some info but couldn't find a price for the conversion. One of the posts mentioned 10k for the conversion, if that's true it's out of the question. I'll buy a new truck before I pay 10 grand for a new tranny.

I looked on destroked.com and their parts seem really high. Anybody contact them and know what they charge? I'm probably only dreaming at this stage so I really don't want to take up any of their time.

This dream stems from the fact that the 48RE in my truck absolutely BLOWS! The tach needle barely moves when it shifts, it never locks in 3rd like my 02 did (maybe this is normal but I don't like it), and it hunts in the lower gears when I'm real easy on the throttle.

Another question, what could I expect to pay if I just wanted to rebuild/upgrade the 48re?

Hello,

Do not put the one out of the chevy(1000 series) in your truck. It is not that strong and expensive.

What you described for the 48RE is normal. Get an aftermarket valve body and torque converter. You will be very happy and spend only 2000.00. Yeah like 2 grand is nothing. A full rebuild with out TC is something like 3000.00 and goes up. Full race and you are over 6 grand.

if you push the tow/haul button it should lock up from second gear on-.as far as the hunting under light throttle there is a tsb on it. it involves changing the governor solenoid i believe. i could be wrong on the exact part. i have the part number in my toolbox at work. the part is about $125 and four quarts of trans fluid and a filter and you'll be all set. i have also heard the 1000 series allison is not that strong.

does anybody know if the newer 6spd auto with the 6.7 is compatible with the 5.9l?

I have heard it is not compatible. Remnik, just get the tranny rebuilt. You won't have those issues. Don't waist your money on an Allison. PRICEY! For the price of one, you could get your 48 built to the....

Upgrading my trans would definitely be the more cost effective solution but I really want a 6 spd auto for the double overdrive and the closer gear spacing. I hate the huge gap from direct to overdrive.

Maybe a new 48re and a gear vendor unit would be better. I'm actually surprised by the responses, I thought everyone would want an allison in their truck. Hell, I just might trade up to an 08 and get the 68rfe and all the other goodies, my payment will be more but I won't have the repair costs.

The Allison is a OK trans with stock power, when you add the power, it has issues as well. I remember reading about some other trying to do this, and it is way expensive. I would say beefing up the 48 RE with a gear vendor unit maybe a very good option.

After you upgrade to the 6.7, then you might be complaining about the poor mileage and emission controls. I would stick with the 05 and build the tranny. Take a ride in someones truck that has a built 48re. I think you will be impressed.

Sounds like you know me personally cuz I'm always complaining about something.

Seriously, the emissions garbage is the main reason I don't already have the 6.7

10K is about right. The Allison is not that strong. You are better off with a built 48RE.

I ve been driving an 03 with a built tranny. I thas been updated to a 48 and just about everything you can do to an auto and i must say it is so different. The triple loc makes a world of difference. I m having my 48 built right now. I'll let you know what I spent and how nice it is. I was seriously considering swapping a 5spd w/an under/overdrive in untill i saw the staggering price. I will live with the 48 for a long time as this conversion is outa reach. My next work truck will be a 6spd manual absolutely.
