What would it take to put a turbo off an '06 onto my '02 in the sig?

What benefits over the stock turbo would I get?

I ask because I can get one with the exhaust elbow for $500 or less.

As far as I know you would just need the exhaust side of a HX-35. 3rd gens have a HX-40 but it wont line up to our engines so the bolt up side needs to be an exhaust side that will fit ours. Dont hold me to it word for word but I think thats all you need.

Im a little new to the mod world here, but if I read this correctly, I can keep the exhaust mounting I have now and bolt up the new turbo?

Is this price ($500) a good deal? I havent seen the turbo yet, but it supposedly has about 16k on it.

I was told from a friend to look for turbine play and if it spun freely, if these two things are present then the turbo is ok. Does that sound right, if not what else do I need to look for?

Shaft play, It can have a little shaft play, But not alot. Its better to have a shop check that out unless you can tell there is no shaft play at all.

As for the exhaust side, Its basically turning the turbo into whats called a hy-brid. A mix of the two turbos. If your kinda new to this, Id let a shop do that part too. Piece of mind ya know.

When it comes to turbo clearances, you always want some. If there is none, that means the bearings are shot, and will be hard to turn. You should be able to move the wheels radially without touching the housings. Once oil flows into the bearings, the clearance is taken up and it won't move around much. Axial (in and out) movement is what you want very little of.

3rd gen turbos are either the HE341 or HE351. Still has the T3 foot, so it will bolt up to our manifolds. The compressor discharge doesn't use a clamp on elbow like ours, but is instead part of the cast housing. The wastegate actuator is bolted to the compressor, which means you can't clock (rotate) the housing to where it would fit better. BigBlue24 did this swap on his truck. Search his name and 3rd gen turbo and you will find his posts with more info and pics.

Putting an 06 turbo onto an 02 will be a project. It is no where near a direct swap. It can definately be done with some time and finding the parts you need, but it will take some fabricating.

Like Tate said, you will have to build your own compressor piping from the turbo to the intercooler since the discharge is different on the HE351 turbo that you are talking about than the stock one.

You will also have to build your own 4" downpipe for it to work. You air filter set up may also have to be modified.

Like i said, it can be done, but it will take some work. None of the parts on the 06 turbo are interchangeable with your stock turbo, so you cant make a hybrid out of it. You can take the compressor wheel and housing off of a 58 or 60mm hx40 and make your hx35 an hx35/40 hybrid.

Just know that the 06 turbo is going to take some fabrication to make it work. If you dont want to deal with the fab work, i would just stick with the stock turbo. I also see that you are still at stock fueling levels, in which case I would leave the stock turbo on anyways.
