Transmission Temp
Today I just pulled a 7k mini on a 5 ton trailer up some good hills and when I got to the top and unloaded I got back in and the temp was 213. The whole time towing it was around 190. The sender is in the whole where edge says to put it on the pass. side of the trans. I think it might have something to do with the fact that I blew a small section of rubber hot line cooler hose and I put in a connector in that was a little small and I think it might be restricting flow. Does this sound right. Thanks for the help

When locked up going down road, the temp generally is 160 degrees or so. Unlocked and pulling a hill will allow 190 degrees plus. Really hard pull will get 240 degrees and temp light on. Running above 250 degrees shortens the life of ATF+4. When it changes color, it's time to change fluid.

This might help out some. http://www.dieseltrans.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=558 Unless everyone is taking temp readings from the same port, they will have different numbers.
Edge tells you to use the rear servo test port (or reverse port). To paraphrase that article for this instance--
That being said, if you watch your trans temps pretty closely and know what they're typically at cruising and towing, you should have an idea of what's "hot". If you're using the rear servo for your sender, 213 is getting up there IMO.

Another favourite place is in the reverse port on the passenger side. This port only has oil in the reverse and manual low positions. This means no oil in the in the drive position. I have had guys phone me arguing with me that they are seeing temps of 200 degrees while driving down the road in stop and go traffic when measuring from this port. My comment to that is congratulations we now know the temps of your tranny case, we can only guess at this point what your tranny temps are.

My service manual states that the temp light will come on at 275* and it'll go into limp mode. I've got my sender in my hot line and I've hit 280* before and never saw the light so I don't know where the computer takes the reading. Normally if unlocked an pulling I can see 220* or so and my fluid is still good. I wouldn't worry about it.
