tranny whine when cold. Normal?

The transmission whines in first / second gear on excleration and deceleration when it's below 20 degrees. And the tranny is not warm when this happens and I am going at speeds between 5 and 25 mph. Has anyone happened to hear on this, is it normal?

I also have the same whine until the trans warm up. However, I have noticed it in the morning when temperatures are as high as 50 degrees.

Ditto here, people claim it is the rear end but I think it is the planetaries in the trans. too.

What about those who have replaced the factory fill with a synthetic? Do any of you with Amsoil or Redline, etc. still get the tranny whine?

I started a thread about a week ago " ordered new drive shaft for 20 mph whistle". If the noise your describing almost sounds like an "owl", it's the same as mine. My truck is in the shop as I type this. I will let you now if the new drive shaft replacement works.

just got back from the dealer. The "whistle" or "whine" is gone. However, it's 50+ degrees. It is supposed to be 20 tomorrow. I should get a better feel if the noise is truly gone. mechanic stated that the "center bearing" was binding up, causing the noise. This noise has only been detected in long wheel base trucks.

It sounds just like an owl. My driveshaft from the trans to the axle was replaced about 6 months ago so I am in anticipation if yours will still whine.

I also have the whine....2004 305 555 auto long box 2wd.
Just noticed it now that it is cold.
Not turbo related...does this when I shut the motor off and coast in neutral.
Sometimes it seams to change pitch when the tranny shifts...sometimes not.
You would think that it would not alter at a gear change if it were only a driveshaft problem because the driveshaft and output shaft speed goes up or down independent of the transmission gear..ie if the truck is at 30 mph in 2 gear or 30 mph in third gear the driveshaft is at the same speed.

As always some of these "noises" are sometimes hard to pinpoint.
I must say, given DC's history of tranny problems, this is somewhat unsettling.
Hopefully it is something simple and easily fixed.

Ok, mine has the noise also but I have never thought much of it. I just thought it was a cold tranny. What is with the drive shaft?? It sounds like it is common to me, did you guys have any other symtoms other than a whine?

My '99 had the whine. Never a problem. The '03 has it. Never a problem. I always thought is was a normal resonation noise from??????. Never have given it much thought. Probably won't give it much more thought.

The sound your hearing is coming from the "center bearing". The drive shaft is a two piece unit. The center bearing between the two pieces is binding a certain speeds causing the whine, whistle or owl sound. Hope this helps

Hey odie2219

I understand that you got a new driveshaft/centre bearing.
If I remember right you got this when it was warm out.
Has this repair solved the problem when it is cold?

It's been 30 degrees all day. The truck sat for 15 hours in 30 degree weather. Before the fix my truck would sing like a bird at that temp. It's supposed to get in the teens the next couple of days, that will be the big test, however I'm fairly confident that the fix worked.
