torque converter

ok, i need a new or better torque converter, and would like to know what most of you have run, or are running with no problems, and near perfect lock up??
i have maybe around 550hp to the rear, and might upgrade some more. the one i have now, slips while towing 5000lbs,under lock up, when getting back on the highway. if i am driving it is fine, just under load really. it is causing heat , and burning the fluid, so i am going to put some thing better in.i don't tow all the time, but want to more and more.truck is not stock, running 315's.
need some input here on what just works, and best price to pay.still have my stocker to send in for a core, so no down time for me.thanks

I'd give Goerend a call. He can build you a converter any way you like.

There is no one else............ call Dave Goerend. He will set you up with exactly what you need and not an "off the shelf item" like most will try to sell you on. I know there are a few good tranny guys out there and maybe if I traveled to their shops I would have an opinion like I have for Dave, but Dave Goerend is if not the best one of the 2 or 3 best in the world for our Dodge 47/48 trannys/converters. And I think everyone on this website will agree even if they have other shops stuff. I just like the down home attitude with no frills type of guys up there. Dave will look you in the eye and describe eveything in detail, all the in's and out's of every item in your trans. And what to do to modify whatever aspect you desire. But I know a close shop to do the work can be a factor also so do some search's and decide who will work for you. I drove from Indiana to Dave's shop in Iowa and I wouldn't hesitate if I had to again. Top notch!!!!!!

I am running a TCI triple for over 30K with Smarty TST and Dr Performance stack and also tow 48 ft living quarters Trailer and its not lite, 3500 DRW and have had no problems, Just keep in mind when you do the converter next thing in the food chain is the trans, at least change out your flywheel while your in there

Lot of opinions and a number of opitons. I have a Dunrite 3 disc custom stall TC and tranmission fully built by local performance/transmission guru. It has performed perfectly both street and track for over 40,000 miles now. I would make all the calls and see where that gets you. Still might just be who gives you a warm fuzzy.

When I was at Dave's, he had a TC from EVERYONE out there building TC for our trucks. He had them all cut in half, and was showing me the differences. He has a patent on his stator, because some of the other shops were copying it. There are still a few getting as close as they can. In fact, he had just gotten a new TC from "un-named", and said he would have to call and talk to them because they were slightly past the measurement limit as it is stated in the patent.

With all that said, Goerend or Suncaost are the only two TC I would consider. Yes, you can buy someone else's and yes it will probably do fine. But when I have seen the guts and know that there are a couple that have a slightly superior design, I wouldn't go with anything else. It's kind of like saying that a cast piston will do just fine - and it might. But if you can buy a forged one for the same price - why not?

yes, i think that there many out there that are good, but not the best. thats the problem i am having now. my tranny is fresh, and just rebuilt with a trans go shift kit, and a torque converter , which i won't meantion which one at this point, and new internals, no billet shafts.the converter works fine for the most part, but when i was towing a trailer, 24' enclosed, empty, it was slipping and getting hot under load, like when pulling onto the highway.i had to back out of it, so when i got home, straight to the tranny shop who did the work, and they pulled the pan, and did a service, it was time, and they told me my converter is not really that good, because it was getting hot, and burning my fluid, tranny is not coming apart, no crap in the fluid other then a darker colour.

Might be the TC. Might not be also. If there isn't enough fluid pressure, it would cause the same results. It vary well could be a VB problem. I can't imagine that anyone is building a TC that is worse than stock, and it sounds like right now you are worse off than stock. When I still had a stock TC/VB I was towing my 8000lb TT with the Edge on level 2. Level 3 would slip, but level 1 and 2 were ok. I would look into getting that resolved before the entire tranny needs rebuilt again.
