star wheel

i have not been working so i have been doing a lot of pump tweaks. i went 1/2 turn down on the star wheel and set the fuel pin to the deep setting. i was wondering how far has everyone else gone with star wheel adjustments?

Mines flush with the top. I dont have a foot anymore so I have plenty of fuel down low already.

Thank you Dave

I had to take the truck through emissions yesterday, so I brought the starwheel up four turns from the bottom, and turned the 'cone back to stock. I lost about 2 PSI, and a touch of power, but the truck smokes a heckuva lot less and actually seems more driveable - it doesn't seem to lug at low boost/RPMs anymore. It also passed with 0.8% opacity (max allowed 30%). I plan on driving it for a few days before I decide whether I'll leave it like this or not, but the odds are pretty good it's staying as is.

I have the fuel screw in 1.5 turns and the smoke screw flush with the housing. Even with the new starwheel and cone settings it will push 22-23 PSI.

Play with it all you want, some guys have left the spring out for full AFC fuel at all times.

You will find that guys with bigger injectors and/or modified AFC levers run the star wheel a lot stiffer than guys with stock injectors.

Like dave said ... I just took the spring out and put it in the glove box .
she makes the smoke if you tromp on it.
my son took his out last night. He thinks all that smoke coming out his 5" stacks is better then having a friend.

If you take the spring out you only gain smoke, not power I would leave the spring in and play with the adjustment. I measured from when the star wheel is flush with the threaded shaft. Mine is .140 down from flush with the shaft. There are also different springs, so with my setting it would be different if I had a different spring.
OH forget it , take the spring out for a day, then put it back in and adjust it.

Just remember you have to make pretty big adjustments with the wheel to tell a difference--try 2 turns at a time to get a feel for it.

''i gave mine 2 turns is it enough wat is it supposed to do ''

What the starwheel actually does is set the spring preload on the AFC diaphram. All else staying the same, the starwheel will dictate at what boost level the AFC cone begins to travel down it's bore. Bring the wheel up, delay the onset of AFC fueling and minimize low end smoke. Turn the wheel down and you get the opposite. Hope this helps.

so basicly it controls smoke does not do much for power

Exactly. I am thinking of backing mine off since I turned the fuel screw in, especially when I get the 3200 spring in and the AFC foot ground.

The star wheel does affect how powerful the truck feels, because if it's set too tight response will be slow due to the pump not fueling hard until there is a lot of boost. It'll still pull a hill just as hard, but it will be more sluggish to respond than with a looser star wheel setting.

When you grind the AFC lever, it's best to back the smoke screw all the way out and run the star wheel up as far as you can. The ground AFC lever gives you more fuel at low boost than you really need to spool the turbo and get rolling, so you want to delay the AFC fuel as long as possible to keep the smoke and low boost EGT down.

so if i understand if i bring starwheel close to top i get less smoke when i floor it but same power on long haul see i go in mud runs what i want is to hit that fuel pedal to the floor and have it smoke the less that i can cause right now its giving a big puff of smoke then the turbo starts to spool and smoke goes away i want less smoke wen flooring it right now my starwheel is in the middle what should i do with it bring it to top or screw it to bottom
