Smarty TNT/R at the Track!

Went to the track last night with the TNT/R program. First 2 runs were done with the Shift Limiter "on" (default stock setting). Last 2 were done with it set to "off". All runs were done with the stock RPM limit (actually 3500...not exactly stock).

1st Run
60' = 1.942
1/8 = 8.221 @ 85.49
1/4 = 12.833 @ 106.50

2nd Run
60' = 1.905
1/8 = 8.215 @ 85.00
1/4 = 12.851 @ 106.05

3rd Run
60' = 1.795
1/8 = 8.076 @ 85.17
1/4 = 12.726 @ 105.70

4th Run
60' = 1.786
1/8 = 8.087 @ 84.81
1/4 = 12.741 @ 105.60

With the Shift Limiter "on" it wouldn't seem to build boost like the other Smarty programs did. I could get about 16-18psi out of it, but there was a weird surging over and over. It looked/sounded/felt like a gasser bouncing off the rev limiter. I guess it was the ECM defueling, but I've never felt it defuel like that before. It's usually smooth and flat when it defuels. The truck in the video that Bob posted the other day didn't seem to have this surging?

As you can see, the 60' times on the first 2 runs were pretty bad. Even with the Shift Limiter "on" this tune drives like a Wild TM program, so I'm not sure why the 60's are slower than what I saw with Beta 4.4? AFAIK 4.4 was supposed to be Mild TM.

Now with the Shift Limiter "off" it was a different story! The truck built boost easier than ever and it spun HARD in 4wd on run #3 (20psi launch). I had the tires aired down a little but not all the way (45psi front, 40psi rear). Still, it's never spun them that long and hard even with a 22psi launch and the tires at 60psi. On run #4 I was thinking if I launched a little easier and didn't spin it would get the 60' time down and maybe run a 12.6XX 1/4. The 60' came down, but I think the launch was only around 15-16psi and it killed the rest of the run.

I'm happy with the numbers, but not sure I want to run this tune on the street because of the boost building/slow 60' issue. I can't drive around all the time with the Shift Limiter "off" because it locks up my Pioneer head unit (the same way Bullydog did). The truck seemed to like Beta 4.4 a little better...just not sure how much it liked the high pressures.

A couple of other observations about the TNT tune. It must be adding more fuel and making more power than 4.4 because my 1/4 trap speeds were higher than ever. Rail pressures are also much more consistent with the TNT tune than any other programming I've ever run...including stock programming! I used to see it fluctuate about 800-1000psi at idle, now it only moves about 200-300 at idle. Same goes for cruising pressures as well...steady as a rock. I have noticed my max RP's are not what they used to be though. I'm now seeing ~22k at WOT where I used to see 24-25k. I guess my poor old stock CP3 is finally showing it's weaknesses. Sounds like it's about time for a Floor-It pump!

I might go back on Friday and try the TNT on #8 stacked with a Quad XZT to see if the pressures come up at all. I'm pretty sure some more pressure would put it at least into the 12.6's. Some cold weather sure wouldn't hurt either!

As far as I could tell it was pretty smoke free.

Tough to tell...it was pulling so hard the whole way! I was just trying to keep an eye on the RPM's, EGT's, rail pressure, fuel pressure, coolant temp, the Duramax back there in my driver side mirror...and then the track every once in a while.

There were some other quick diesels there this time. 4-5 Dmaxes running 12.79 - 13.80's and another 3rd gen Dodge that went 13.01!

Hey Jeremy,
Thanks for sharing your results! Looking rather good considered that we're still beta'ing stuff.

Which CaTCHER did you run? Which timing, TM, & & & &...

Thanks,
Marco

And did you pick those settings to run at the track based on seat of the pants feel after playing around with numbers?

So what settings and why?

Hi Marco,

My first name is Justin.

It was #9 of course! Haven't you ever seen a picture of my Smarty?

Bob hasn't sent me the Revolution program yet, so this was just the TNT/R without the extra options.

I just loaded #9 because that's what I've always used and the CP3 has never had trouble keeping up. In retrospect I probably should have tried #7 to see if the RP stayed up and made a power difference. I don't think 22k is really low enough to have a big effect on power though?

Good Times man. I run around on 7 sometimes with the REVO and there is a big diff in 9. I can feel it when I drive FO SHO. I hope to go to Tulsa and test on sat. We'll see what happens.

Revolution TNT/R is loaded up and ready to go!

I'm hoping the moderate RP increase will help keep the rail full.

Thanks John!

Haven't made it to the track again, but a little update for everyone. I loaded the Revolution TNT software and chose the #1 Mild (default) Torque Management setting. I tried building boost and had no problem hitting 20psi! The surging thing didn't happen at all.

For the rail pressure setting I chose #2 Moderate increase and the rail seems to be holding pressure better. Before if I was cruising and rolled into it a little the RP would dip down from 18-20k to 15-16k and then slowly come up. I haven't had a chance to really open it up all the way yet, but now when I roll into it while cruising it doesn't seem to dip down before it starts increasing.

I think I'm in love with this new Revolution TNT program!
