Will sliding plate back help egts and give more usable power?

Yesterday pulling my loaded 5th wheel toy hauler (approx 10,000 lbs.) up a ½ mile long freeway transition I had to hold my throttle at a ¼ pedal to keep egts from going over 1200. The whole time I was at 25 mph with the hazards flashing. It was a hot day at around 97 degrees and I was only able to do 55-65 mph most of the 50 mile trip with the egts at 1200 95% most of the time. The truck water temps were running between 210-220 much of the way as well. Pulling grades I know I have an overheating issue that needs to be addressed, but that is for another post.
What I’m curious to know is if sliding my #6 TST plate back will help egts and give me more usable power. Or in this case will it just put me at say ¾ throttle with the same speed and temperature. The mechanic that has done the work on my truck turned up the pump when he put the 300 hp injectors in so I know I’m getting plenty of fuel and that is pushing my egts up. Would sliding the plate back be any benefit aside from not having to watch the egts so closely? The whole reason for these upgrades was so I WOULDN’T be holding everybody up going 25 mph with the flashers going!
BTW, under normal driving conditions I don’t have an overheating issue and at 65-70 on the freeway I’m looking at 600-700 degrees in the egt gauge. If I really get on it I can push the temps to the 1300 range, but it’s not too much of an issue. Readings are pre turbo from the exhaust manifold. Thanks!

Bump your timing more, that will seriosly help your EGT's, I'd go to at least 16.5*. Sliding your plate back will just let you keep from watching your EGT gauge, nothing else, it will limit your power and you'll still be doing 25mph. You could put in an adjustable valet switch to help your pump from pushing too much fuel with boost, and tighten up your starwheeland slide the AFC back, but again it will only help a little. You really need a bigger turbo for running what you have, even a Super B would help esp since you tow a trailer, but a 62/12 wouldn't hurt either.

What kind of boost numbers are you seeing? Sounds to me like a boost leak, or an open wastegate, do you have a boost elbow on your turbo?

Is your headgasket leaking? High temps can mean either high load or super heated coolant due to headgasket leakin a bit.

I'm most interested in your boost numbers though.

The fuel plate I have came with a boost elbow which I installed and my boost seems normal. The max if I'm pushing it is 35 psi, but if I remember right in this case it was pushing 20 to 30 psi. Other than a little lag starting out, the boost is very responsive and seems normal to me. As far as a coolant leak that is possible. I made the mistake of splicing in one of those coolant flush kits and the coolant did leak a few drops now and then from the hose clamp but that's stopped now. I haven't seen any more signs of leakage but I need to get a pressure test to be sure.
I'm a little hesitant to spend the money to have the timing readjusted unless that would for sure fix the problem. It sure would be a cheaper way to go. Otherwise I would probably throw the money at a new turbo. I hate to spend the $$ but as it stands now the engine is no better off then when I started if I'm still creeping up the hills. So what do you think, would timing alone do it or should I start looking at turbos?
As far as sliding the fuel plate back, I guess that was wishful thinking!

You can't expect to have low EGT on a hard pull with 30 + pounds of boost. There is a way to bring the EGT down shift.

I assume you mean downshift. In this scenario it is with OD off. With OD on my EGT rises about 50*. At 25 mph I guess I could manually downshift into second and see what that does, but it may have already been in second. My goal is cooler temps at a higher mph which would at least require me to be in 3rd.

Ya I meant down shift. I don't like to do that but, it is a reality pulling heavy will make you do that. The injectors are the reason for heat, you need more air with them.

I hear you. I have an Amsoil 4510 Nanofiber filter on it and that helped. I wonder if an aux fan in front of the intercooler would help cool things. Might help the water temp too.
So far from all the reading I've done here on the forums if you want to significantly bring down EGT's and have high hp they all seem to point to the turbo. I should have known when I started this if I was in for a penny I was going to be in it for a pound to get it right... Somebody please enlighten me if there is a better way! Thanks!

P.S. Need95-00CTD, Any idea how much the timing could reduce my temps?

By air he means a new turbo. I have a High Tech Turbo 62/14 and with my 370 injectors I can pull #7000 all day and only see 1250 degrees when really pulling up a nice grade at 55-65 mph.
New turbo and do the timing yourself, its real easy.

Doh! I should have figured that out. Sorry Clayten. I've read good things about the HTT 62/14 and that the 62/12 might be better for an auto. From what I understand the HTT's can handle higher temps than a stock turbo so I guess 1250 for extended periods would be just fine. I'm just starting to get my head around all the turbo stuff. Going to see what I can find out about the Super B. Sorry for all the newbie questions. I know you guys must get tired of hearing the same stuff over and over again... Now i just rediscovered the water/meth topic... Got lots of reading to do... Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help.

For the money I think you will like the HTT 62/12. I have a 5sp. and forgot about the surge issue. I thought that the surge issue was on the 64/14 turbo and larger. The 62/14 spools a little slower than the 62/12, but the 62/14 will cool better when under boost and load. Call HTT and tell them what you want to do, and they will set you in the right direction.
Water/meth is a good way to keep EGTs down, but from what I read you will need a large tank to run for a while without filling up all the time.
I researched all of the options, and the BEST and right option is a larger turbo.

More air will allow you to burn the fuel you are already putting in. With that said, less fuel with your current turbo setup will allow for more efficient burning, with less heat. I indeed believe that for the time being, you can slide your plate back, and find that you have more 'useable' power. A bigger charger is your ultimate answer to take full advantage, but the bandaid so to speak is to slide your plate back for now. There is a way, without spending money. But what fun is that?

First I needed dirt bikes, then I needed a toy hauler to haul the dirt bikes, then I needed the fuel plate to pull the toy hauler, then I needed a trans that could handle the fuel plate, then I needed more fuel to drive the new trans, next I need a new turbo to handle the added fuel, then I'll need a new 4" EB to replace my 3" EB so I can stop it all.....You know what I'm sayin'?
Dirt bikes are expensive. Thanks for all the input. I see a new turbo in my future...
