Shut off problem....

My wifes 93 is not shutting off when the key is turned off. This is starting to happen more frequently. I replaced the ignition switch and that does not seem to have cured the problem. Is there a fuel shut off solenoid? and if so where is it located? A pix of it's location would be extremely helpful if anyone has a schematic or a digital pic.

thanks again!

No pictures as no 1st gen anymore but,

There is a fuel shut off. It is located on the Injector Pump and it has a lever that you would want to turn Counter Clockwise until it shuts off. It is spring loaded.

Hope this helps until you can get it fixed. Maybe a choke cable running from inside the cab to this?

Wannadiesel is another good source of information on that issue. The shut down solenoid is on the VE pump. They go bad and are expensive to replace. The alternative is a choke cable rigged up to the shut down lever on the driver's side of the VE injection pump.

I thought my ears were burning...

The shutdown solenoid is located near the back of the pump on the top. It looks like a big nut (22 mm I think) and has two wires going to it. In order to get it off you will have to take a Dremel and hack off part of the rear pump support bracket. You'll see what you need to do to get a wrench in there and swing it, the part you cut off is not holding anything.

The cheapest place to get it is your local VW/Audi dealer. You want p/n 028-130-135-B, I paid a little under $50 in August.

Is this truck turned up a bunch? Usually what happens is a little chunk of rubber gets torn out of the plunger. If this is what happened to yours, you will want to modify the plunger. Chuck it in a drill and run it against some 400 grit sandpaper until the end is no longer concave, then put a nice radius on the edge. Stretch the spring about 2 coils worth to compensate for the lost material.

Shut off.!!!

Thanks guys! Found out last nite before I saw Wannadiesels post about the solienoid from a mechanic friend!

This truck is stock! but now the truck won't start. My wife stalled out yesterday evening at a local gas station. The mech fuel pump is working but there is no fuel after cranking with an open injector line........hope the injector pump is not out. I am thinking that this solenoid being electronic also needs to open and since it doesn't seem to work to shut it down it makes sense to me that it now is failing to open may be the problem.......does that sound right?

Thanks a million for the part # as I could not find it anywhere at any local auto parts stores...I find that odd as this truck is 12 years old.

I would like to trash this truck body as it is beat up and the inside everything is going to sh_t. Would love to find another extended cab chassis to drop this cummins in!

Thanks for the help as always!

You can remove the shut-off solenoid, remove the rubber plunger and spring inside of it, and then join the Cable Shut-Down Crew. If it's the solenoid, and it sounds like it certainly could be, this will fix it for now. To shut down, you have to use the "run away" lever on the side of the point. You can attach a cable to it, run it into the cab, and use that for mechanically shutting off the engine.
