The .44 mag might be a bit overkill, ya think?

Get some of those small black mouse houses w/the two holes on either end. "Strategically" (LOL) place them along the outside of your house w/the "bait" in them. Has worked well for years. Also note, dog food negates the effects of poision so make sure to have it all put up/away. The mice don't know this but if they eat dog food after the poision your efforts are worthless.

I use the glue traps. In dark spots they dont even know they're there til they run over it.

We had mice in the office for a while and tried the old school traps. They must be getting smarter with each generation as all but one (probably the village idiot) just ate the bait right off without tripping the bale. The glue traps however...well we dont have any more if that tells you anything.

Try a neon sign transformer with one contact on some hardware cloth and the other contact twisted onto the spring from a ball point pen. Smear a bit of peanut butter on the spring and position it 3 inches above the hardware cloth. Turn it on and walk away. How will you know when to clear the corpses? You'll hear it. (bzzap... zzt)

What I couldnt believe was that nowhere in the article did it say "Alcohol was involved". Thats what made it weird.
