question about the 98 12v

I'm a 3rd Gen guy so please excuse my ignorance. I've always heard the a 98 12v is THE truck to have. Someone please tell me why? What's so good about a 98 12v. Thanks.

Nick

unless you dont get a quad cab...then i dont know.

I think it because you could get the 12v with the biggest stock pump and the truck had the new interior, other than that i dont know either

98 12 valve trucks are referred to as the holy grail , because they retain the mechanically controlled P7100 injection pump , but it is wrapped in the same body as the 24v trucks , with the updated interior , which includes more creature comforts. Also, it was a first for ext cab short box , or even better , quad cab short box.

If you guys know where there is any GOOD 98 12v trucks for sale.... let a feller know... (check out my sig)

Thanks. Educate a relative noob...why is the mechanically controlled P7100 injection pump a good thing to have?

Because it is relatively bulletproof as compared to the electronic injection and lift pumps on the 3rd generation models. If you will read the posts concerning the pump failures on the 3rd generation trucks you will come to the conclusion that they are probably one of the highest failure items on the 3rd gen trucks. I have rarely heard of a P7100 failing.

the specific 98 benefits.....

1. updated interior (same as later trucks)
2. Opening rear doors of the quad cab, which is really the biggie, since if you want opening rear doors, and the 12 v....then 98 is it.

I wanted rear doors, cause of kids, the interior is nice to have but not why I wanted it. I new I wanted the 12 v.......all mechanical, I mean ALL Mechanical, and easy to turn up......and reliable beyond reality.

I just about have my nv5600 converson done.....and with it, I really wouldn t trade my truck for any....A new four door puts me over on lenght, I pull a 50 ft trailer and just make state laws by about 4 inches.

The 3rd Gen failures are injectors not pumps, as far as I have seen.

The 97-98 12Valve 5 speed trucks have the most HP offered stock for the P7100(215HP). The P7100 injection pump is far superior to the VP-44 used in 98.5-02 models. Mechanical lift pump vs electric lift pump, too.

True, the 98 12valve has the updated interior and QC options, plus the shortbox option, too.

But I'd have to say the 12Valve motor and 5speed(215HP) setup is the most sought after, over the automatic(180HP) model.

The best of both worlds, motor and truck options for the 2nd gen models.

I think BBWD meant the 98.5-02 trucks with the VP pumps, which are technically 2nd gen referring to body style, but the 3rd pump style.

a mechanical pump is more reliable and you won't even come close to getting as much power out of an electronic pump. mechanical pumps are stupid they don't care how much air/fuel is going into the engine they just dump as much diesel as you want them too. the reason a 98 12v quad cab, short bed, 5speed is the truck to have is because i own one .they usually cost around $17,000-20,000 depending on milage, good luck finding one it only took me 3 years

Since it's so desirable ..

Is it possible to swap them over? (I guess with $$$, everything is possible but at a reasonable cost wise .. 100% bolt-on, no welding, no cutting, 100% plug and play)

Also, not all 97-98 5 sp are 215 hp! My 97 5 sp Cali model is only 180 hp.

Find a 215 pump

and yes you can swap them over... usually, i dont see a difference in your cali model truck though, except for that possible EGR? maybe?

I think the idea of swapping a 12v into a newer truck is great. The only problem may be you couldn't register it because it would have an engine older than the manufacture date of the truck. EPA and DMV are pretty much unbending on that here. And if you already had the truck and swapped in and older engine and decided to sell or trade it later on you might run into problems then for the same reason. Just my $0.02.
