Question about 6's For Don M
Question about 6's For Don M
This message is a question for Don M ,
Im running a set of 6's on a single and have noticed a slight amount of fuel in the oil 1.3% to be exact. I dont have any major blow by or power loss problems but in samples have also seen what appears to be high Cylinder wall wear and ring wear. I was curious if you had ever seen a oil analysis with mach 6's or if there might be a wash problem!
Thanks
Lucas

Lucas, I am not Don...and am way down the Technology 'food chain' from him. But, while waiting for him, and FWIW, I have seen 0 fuel in oil on my samples, with Mach 4's...even when testing extended changes (no oil or filter change) for 10,000 miles. This was done on both Amsoil and my companys high quality 'Winston Cup" Race Oil.
I do have some expertise with oil analysis. What tells you that your getting ring/cylinder wear?

read on another forum that high aluminum content will indicate the piston skirt wear on the cylinder walls.
here is the thread, hopefully i can post it here since it is an informative thread

Thanks for the replies guys! I only had 400 Miles on the last sample just for the concern i had wear , I was getting unusual sounds! Right before i took the sample i made Some HARD runs and some VERY HOT runs, Duh, your going to see some wear but i wasnt expecting to see that much fuel!
Aluminum is lower than average, but considering the short oil on the run! Molybdenum was high at 197, and iron was high at 20, The Average if i recall correctly was 23 for iron but thats at a 6700 mile change!
I was somewhat alarmed buy a low flash point at 390F but considering i had extreme egts a few times on the oil i can see that! .3 Insolubles and 1.5% Fuel!
Blackstones quote was Iron from steel parts sharing the oil and chrome from rings (Chromium at 4) !
Problem being we havent done an analysis on this truck until now so i have no trends to base it on!
Not to mention it could be somthing else causing wear issues!
More than anything i was curious about the fuel ? I've seen where guys have run a set of sticks with the wrong washers or somthing to that effect and wash the walls in turn causing wear problems, but i wouldnt think that from a set of dons!
Thanks again for the thoughts!
Not really worried about it, It can only get meaner!

FYI... Molybdenum (or 'Moly') is a beneficial additive, not a wear metal. So no sweat there!
Hard runs with big injectors is more likely to blow the fuel past the rings than to come from "wash". JMO
I always get higher wear metal readings when racing season starts and change oil more often when drag racing.
(And after one long day at the track, rear end gear lube has 'mud' on the magnets similar to 10,000 miles on the road)
But as you acknowledged, without a trend from previous oil analysis... very hard to tell much.

it went back with factory thickness! Its not really of much concern, just more curiosity! I guess thats what killed the cat hu?
I would think what caused the high fuel numbers is more contributed to running hard then a long idle period after! Considering theres no blow by it really dosent make sense! I am still on a single, Considering that i could be getting some wash before spool but who knows! I'm going to run another 2000 miles and send of for another analysis!
I'll repost then or when i port and polish the head , do the cam and springs!
We'll know what it looks like then!
PS , Isnt Moly used on our rings or pistons, i could have been misinformed !

Thanks RJ,
Misunderstanding there! The more I pound this truck the more im thinking it somthing in the timing case, I have an unusal dingling in there , but that still dosent explain the fuel so who knows! I can see some chrome from the rings at 1800+ ,
Thanks for all the thoughts guys!
