Puzzled

I am clueless about what is going on with my truck. Today, i removed my 275's & installed EDM 1.5'S, which according to claims smoke less than the 275's & get more mpg. they smoke at least triple the 275's. A friend wanted to buy my 275's & EZ, so I cut them loose. Now with only EDM's for power enhancement, I have almost zero smoke. I am puzzled about my boost. I am building 32 pounds with no power module of any kind. I thought these engines defueled at 21 to 22 lbs. of boost, without a boost fooler. I am considering the EDGE COMP to replace my EZ. Is this the best way to go? THANKS for any help!!

Cool

I think on our '99s, it should start the defueling at 19.5lbs of boost.

32 lbs seems awfully high for those injectors.

Do you still have the little brass elbow in at the turbo? You must, or have your wastegate blocked in some manner.

I have never had a boost elbow that I know of. The waste gate was shut by a mig welder. THAT DOOR IS LOCKED! That boost level is throwing me for a loop. I was getting 35 lbs. before I removed the EZ. Now i am getting the 32 lbs.

I think I know what is going on here. The ECM is de-fueling that is why you are getting less smoke (less fuel = less smoke). The injectors are still letting more fuel in because you have more holes with those injectors even in the de-fueled state (that is why you still have 32psi boost while you are still on the go pedal). In the de-fueled state you have enough boost to burn clean. If I’m right you will probably have one or more of the following codes set, P0236, P0234, and possibly P0238.
Hope the more knowledgeable chime in here I really would like to know how this turns out.

i'm not too much in the know here, but my question would be, without the EZ in place, why would the ecm allow fueling to that level of boost even with those injectors? is this going to be explained by the codes you listed? thanks

I’m no expert on this; this is just my observation and thoughts.
With the waste gate welded shut there is no opening of the waste gate, so fuel will be the deciding factor of how high the boost will go. I doubt the ECM can de-fuel all the way, that could present a dangerous situation for the driver (driver trying to avoid an accident). I’m sure there is a limit on how far the ECM can de-fuel (if ECM de-fueled too much Chrysler could be liable if that was proven to cause the accident). The program was written around the stock injectors. We change everything when we add bigger injectors. The smoke clears up because the ECM de-fuels to a level that just so happens to allow cleaner burning. The EZ on the high level (jumper all the way to the right) will allow more fueling at lower boost levels so we get smoke. When you get the Edge Comp or EZ you can put it on a lower level and it will clear up the smoke. My truck was smoking and Timinva told me to set the EZ on the second level to clear up the smoke, and that worked. The second level (center set of pins) reduces the fueling at the lower boost levels. Now I only get a little smoke when I’m hard on the go pedal.
The codes I mentioned are all related to high boost situations.
This is just my $0.02 worth, still looking for the more knowledgeable to set us straight.

Think Billg has it right. The ECM doesn't have any way of knowing you have bigger injectors. Because you have the 1.5's and your wastegate is disabled, your getting more fuel, therefore more boost. Must be getting an overboost code.

The only codes I am picking up are a 1693(DTC detected in PCM), 0230(LIFT PUMP check out of range), 0336(CKP SENSOR ERROR). I actually had all 3 of these codes before i changed anything about my truck yesterday. I cleared the 0336 code & my check engine light went out. the code came back, so the light came on. The check engine light came on & off several times yesterday. I am going to try cleaning my crank sensor before replacing it. The lift pump code is probably due to the fact i have a CARTER 4601 hp pump in place of my stock lift pump. I have the 4601 pulling 12 to 13 volts & the same continuous pressure all the time, unlike the stock lp which fluctuates both voltage & pressure. I don't know what the 1693 is. Does that DTC stand for DODGE TURBO CUMMINS in PCM? Maybe the PCM finally figured out what kind of engine it has (LOL). Hey BILL, as you know I had the RAPTOR BOX, which some claim to be just like the EZ, but I do not see any adjustments on it. I was thinking about trying an EZ to see what results I would get, until I found a COMP for 400 bucks this morning. That is RIGHT, 400 BUCKS. The box was opened, but never installed on a truck. The guy sold his truck before installing. LUCKY ME.

DTC stands for Diagnostic Trouble Code.
For the adjustments on the EZ, look at the end with no cable, there are two allen wrench screws holding the end plate on. Remove plate, and then put jumper on center pins. These settings are looking into the end with the PC board on the bottom. The jumpers are just to the right of center.
The EZ installation manual says:
Setting 1 Decreased low boost fueling (For trucks with large injectors) All the way to the left.
Setting 2 Decreased low boost fueling (For trucks with moderate injectors) Center ***** This would be us.
Setting 3 Most responsive (For trucks without injectors or if smoke is not a concern) All the way to the right. The way it comes from the factory.
For the Comp, just put the setting on one of the lower numbers to get less smoke.
The codes being set would depend on how long the high boost condition was in place. Short burst might not set the code. I’m not real sure how long the condition has to be present to set the code.
P0236--Map Sensor Too High Too Long. How long is too long?
Good Luck.
