Be careful with Acetone! I worked with it for years, and it will eat up rubber compounds and plastics that other solvents won't touch.

I would think there's injector cleaners out there that would work just as well as that low ratio of acetone, without running the risk of degrading any rubber in the fuel circuit...

With all the additives that already come in todays fuels, I can't imagine that adding a 1/4 cup of anything to a 30 gallon tank would have any benefit.

With that said, if I was going to put in an additive, it would be something specially designed for diesel engines such as Power Service or the like.

A few years ago I pulled an old Volvo out of a barn where it had sat without turning the engine for close to 10 years. I got it running after a bit of a fight but one injector refused to do anything, no matter what I did. So I removed the injector. blew it dry of gas and then filled it with lacquer thinners. Reinstalled it, connected up the lines, fired it up and let it idle. Within 5 minutes the injector came to life and the engine ran smoothly.
Lacquer thinner and other solvents such as acetone can damage rubber seals and other things but if used sparingly and briefly, then chances of damage is minimal.

my pop use to use atf in every tank on his old 90 6.2 diesel. it worked for him [he never had any problems] but i don't think it would be good on electronic engines

Out of curiosity, why not? How/why would the electronics change the burning characteristics of the fuel with ATF added?

A gallon of black used engine oil burns fine in a full tank, guess a quart of atf would also...
