Power steering pump going bad?

When I turn the wheel to the right I get a slight noise and feel something that's a little rough through the steering wheel. Turning to the left, there's no noise and it feels smooth. Is this an early sign of the pump failing, or is there something else I should look into?

History - I've got 135k miles on it, it really groaned this winter when it was -20F. I drew the fluid out of the reservoir and replace with lube guard, which really quieted things down.

Dealer pumps are pricey ($539), online the same pump is $395 delivered, while a local diesel shop sells Cardone rebuilt pumps for $97. If I need a pump the Cardone price sounds good, but I wonder about the reliability. Anyone comment on experience with the Cardone rebuilts?

Thanks guys.

cardone is fine quality- largest reman company in the US. Check Rockauto.com for pumps too.

Check the steering linkages first for slop, binding, etc.

I like Rock Auto's prices AND Cardone remans are a crap shoot. Steering rack for 78 Datsun Z is fine. Alternator for 93 suburban & 92 F250 were crap. Hyroboost for for Burbon was trash.

I buy local if possible so I can just run down to the store for an exchange. I did find a shop that installed a Cardone steering box on my Ram and warrantied labor on the lifetime Cardone box. That said, I don't really like the Cardone box. When I have time, I'm going to try Redhead's box & install it myself. If that doesn't work, I'll live with the Cardone box(es)

I replaced mine with an ATSCO pump from AutoZone. They are re manufactured as are the Cardone but AZ gives you a lifetime warranty and ATSCO offers great customer service if you should have need to contact them.

You say that it feels different turning right to left. Just my thoughts here but the pump doesn't know or care which way you are turning it just supply's the presser to move something. But before you buy a new one try this:

Some have had good luck by just taking the valve apart and cleaning the filter (screen) and putting it all back together.
