Re:overflow valve

Yes, the spring in the overflow valve can be stretched, but this only helps temporarily. Stretch it to a free length of .550 inch. If your spring in your valve is ok, you won't notice much of a difference, but a fuel pressure check before and after will tell for sure.

Be careful not to lose any shims or washers when you take it apart. Only the center bolt needs to be removed for inspecting.

Hey kandgo, is it madison michigan, or holt michigan?? I have read on another website and each time hey mention this shop, it's in a different town??? Thanks, Kevin

Re:overflow valve

Well, based on the info kandgo provided, I called and spoke with Marty. Really nice guy! It turns out he only works on pumps and turbos. I was in the area so I stopped by. Nice clean shop, profesional looking. We talked about Dodge/Cummins diesels, and he gave me a few pointers on timing. We also talked about the VW Jetta TDI diesel (he has one, I have one).

He told me he is out of the overflow valves, "but will get some more in in a week and a half". BTW they are made by the same company that makes them for Bosch.

He also checks injectors, and I'm going to pull mine and have him check them out. I have his business card in my hand:

Precision Diesel Injection & Turbo, Inc.
1286 N. Cedar
Mason, MI 48854
Phone: 517-694-1522

He really didn't have to take the time to "shoot the breeze" and it was really nice that he did. He gave me a ton of info and I never even spent a dime with him (yet).

I was also amazed at the size of some of those injection pumps he has sitting on the shelf. Pretty impressive. I may even have him "tweak" my pump. But thats way ahead of he game. So based on my experience with him so far, it's a first class outfit.

Gotta go read a bedtime story to the 4 year old, I'll see if I can find a pic or a diagram for the location of the overflow valve and post later on this eve (if somebody wants to beat me to it, be my guest ;D) Kevin

Re:overflow valve

Yeah, you can't hug em enough! She is 4 years old and can tell the difference between a harley and a triumph just by the sound! She amazes my friends when I take them out to the garage and have her show them where the turbocharger is, the injection pump, the intercooler, etc. I am restoring an old Honda 50 (monkey bike) for her right now. She is right there, handing me tools, watching, getting her painted nails dirty! It's pretty cool.

Bcmopar1, I'm sending you that pic in your e-mail. Can't figure out how to post it here. It is taking a little time (I'm on dial up) to send, but it's a good clear pic. One thing I forgot to tell you in the atatched note, make sure you get new washers for the valve as well (I think Kandgo suggested the same thing earlier). Hope it helps, Kevin

Re:overflow valve

KD460: Wow..$20/plus shipping for an O/V? dang, Piers sells them "stock" for like $65

BCMopar1: As well as changing out the O/V,you might want to have someone bump your timing up to 15.5-16 degrees then run a tank or 2 of DieselKleen {grey bottle} at Wal-Mart--might give you another 40-50 miles from a tank.

Mileage? Doubtful
can anyone tell me how or if the overflow valve can affect the m.p.g. and where it is ???
The overflow valve exists to keep a full supply of fuel to the injection pump. If it is very bad, you will get a miss at idle, or maybe even at part throttle. If that happens, you may have poor mileage. If you replace it short of outright failure, I doubt it will affect your mileage to any appreciable degree. I have ben wrong before.... All to be taken FWIW :

Re:overflow valve

Hey Hammer, I think you just discovered a problem for me! I have a faint "miss" (I call it a miss cause it feels like a spark plug missing on a gasser) at about 900 to 1500 rpms. I can only feel it while at no load (neutral or park), and do not feel it under load. Starts at 900 and goes away at 1500.

Not very noticable (but I do), no smoke problem, and I'm getting about 20 highway empty. Otherwise it runs well.

I will be checking my timing when I figure out how, but I'm glad you mentioned those symptoms. Would stretching the spring remove that miss? I know that stretching it is only a temporary thing. I was beginning to think it was an injector or something.

BTW, those valves are the one piece units like the newer style. I was not able to get any cause kandgo bought the last ones . I'll get a few new ones when they are back in stock

Thanks, Kevin
