Mileage on my new rig
hey guys just wanted to ask a question about cummins mileage. i just bought me a preowned ctd yesterday, and im utterly impressed with the power of this thing. anyways, i was wondering if mileage in the 10-12mpg range is normal for this rig? specs are on my sig. the truck has 40k miles. im going on what my overhead reads out, so it could be off. i just figured i would see around 14-15 at least, seeing as my dads '03 ford psd 4x4 get around that. all the mileage has been city. when i run this tank down i will manually calc. my mileage to see how far off my readout is.
also could anyone tell me the different size fuel tanks dodge used in this truck?

My truck has 5300 miles on it now and my overhead is consistently shows to be getting 1.2-1.5 better than what I get when I hand calculate. I started off getting around 16 when it was new. I am now getting almost 17 when figuring by hand. I do alot of highway and backroad driving so I will soon see how good it will get.

do not trust the read out. Your best bet is to hand calculate the numbers. To do that on your next fillup, reset your trip counter. Drive your truck and get as close to E as possible (The more diesel you use, the more accurate the calculation). Then on your next fillup after that, take the miles traveled and divide that by the # of gallons used to calculate your MPG.
If your speedo hasn't been re-calibrated, your miles traveled will be slightly off. With your 33" tires, you speedo will show that you traveled less miles than you actually did, which will erroneously make your MPG lower. You should ask your dealer to recalibrate your speedo for your tires.
On a side note, you list 33's on 18's. What exactly is the tire size you are running (for example 265/70/17).
