how long does a 12v last?

I am looking at purchasing a 1994 dodge 2wd 2500 with 345k miles on it. I have no idea of the history of this vehicle, but the motor supposodly was rebuilt at 300K miles and the injector pump replaced. the pickup body is all beat up, but it is the motor I am wanting. I know the motors are good for 300,000+ miles, but how good are the odds it still has a long life left? Thanks for any suggestions.

Under good maintainence you should have no problems pulling 800K+ out of these engines. I've heard of engines that have over a million miles on them. Honestly I've never heard of a Cummins wearing out unless someone did something stupid, like run it out of oil or something like that.

Cummins recommends a rebuild at 300k when the 12 valve is used in other applications such as tractors. gensets, etc but makes no recommendations when it's in a Dodge pickup. Probably due to the variability of uses/users.

My feeling is if a '95 has over 300k on it that it was mostly used long distance on the highway, not city stop and go, short trips which wear on the engine more.
It will probably go another 300k quite easily.

Ya, Im with Infidel on that one. I have seen and drove them with 50k-600K miles and to be honest i really couldn't tell a difference. I would honestly not be worried about buying one as long as it dont have a hole lot of blow by and it sounded good. IE mising, ticking, knocking, exc. though Ive never herd one do any of these examples.

Well, if the engine was rebuilt at 300k then it's only got 45k on it, right? Ask for proof of the rebuild and you're good to go.

As to the question of how long one will run in normal service, well, it's like the tootsie-pop commercial---the world may never know
