KDP No More!
Killed the Killer Dowel Pin today. Not that bad of a job. Did it while also painting the bathroom and watching the football game. Removed fan, shroud, washer resevior and coolant recovery bottle last night. Pulled the rest of the junk today.
A few tips, comments, observations are:
To remove the coolant recovery bottle and washer resevior, use a flat piece of bar stock about 8 inches long and 1/8 to 3/16th thick to pry the plastic apart where the teet sticks through the fan shroud. One on the coolant bottle, two on the washer bottle. Drain the washer fluid from under neath and have about 2 feet of 1/4 hose to drain it into a bottle. Dont forget to unplug the wires before removing the bottle.
The gasket is a little tricky when reinstalling. When you pick up the M8x1.25x25 bolt for the tab, pick up 2 more and cut the heads off. Hand thread them into a few of the bolt holes to serve as a guide for the cover and gasket. A few close pins will help hold the gasket to the cover till you get it on the guide pins.
The seal is a challenge, it helps to sand some of the paint off the metal cover where the seal gets pressed in, use the driver thingy that comes with the seal kit, it will help protect the seal when driving it in. It is ok if you start the seal a little cocked, if you keep tapping (within reason) you should be able to even it out. Be prepared though, I think was the toughest part of the job. Make sure the crank is very clean and dry (the part the seal slips on to) and don't forget to use the little plastic guide for the seal.
Mark the harmonic balancer BEFORE you remove it so you can put it back on in the same position. The hardest part about removing the balancer is being able to prevent it from spinning while loosening the bolts.
There are two different lengths of bolts used on the cover, no biggie, you can't install them in the wrong place. The gap for the sensor on the balancer is .050
Make sure you have a rag stuffed into the openings towards the bottom so less likely to get dirt and bolts in there. Also use a magnet when placing the tab and bolt into place. The tab looks realy easy to drop into never never land.
The fan will come off when you whack the flat of the nut (towards th edge). It is reverse thread, give it a few good whacks with a piece of bar stock, chisel, whatever. Penetrating oil the day before is a good idea. The fan and shroud come off together, I never was able to take the fan out with the shroud in place.
This is just some of the stuff I recall as being note worthy, others have posted great info on how to do the job and I reccommend you read them all. It's not as bad as it sounds, just take your time. Hope this helps, the bathroom looks good and the wife is happy, my team lost! Kevin
BTW, my pin was seated in the stock location, just below flush.
