K&n Oil

One of my friends just sprayed a entire brand new can of K&N recharge oil on my filter. He sprayed both sides and it is dripping with oil. This is the only filter I have and I HAVE to go on a trip tomorrow morning. Will the extra oil mess up my turbo or engine??

I read somewhere that another brand had voided warranties on gas engines with gauze type filters. They had shown that too much oil on the filter will mess up the MAP sensor or the air temp sensor or something, and that the bad reading would cause improper mixture which would cause engine damage.

I'll add a link later if I can find the story.

I don't know if it would harm a diesel or not, but if it were mine I would rewash and properly oil the filter...

Thanks for the help and I would rewash it but, he used all of my oil so I can't. I live about a hour out of town or I would go to Wal-Mart and get a new refill kit.

You're asking for trouble if you use it over oiled, it will gunk everything up. Go get a paper filter and use it till you remove the oil.

All the stores around here are out of the K&N recharge kit but I can get a recharge kit for a Fram filter. Will there spray on oil be just as good or am I just spinning my wheels?

I've used PJ1's fabric air filter oil with good results on the K&N on my Harley. You might check cycle shops... many of them carry the K&N brand oil if you would feel more comfortable with that.

Exclamation

Make sure to follow K&N's cleaning instructions, if you don't you'll have trouble.
Instructions here> http://www.knfilters.com/clningins.htm

One important step these instructions don't cover, but would have come with a new filter, is that before installing the cleaned filter in your airbox you should run a small bead of silicone grease on the lower edge of the sealing gasket. If you don't it is guaranteed that the filter will leak around the edges. You should reapply this grease every time you pull the filter out. To avoid this don't open your airbox unless you intend to service the filter, the filter minder will tell you when to service, looking at the filter won't tell you anything.
Here are the expanded instructions for a Cummins>

Yeah right! The filter minder??? That thing has never moved or worked on my truck the dealer has replaced it twice with the air filter that was plugged solid with dirt!

The dealer had told me that this device was not designed properly and it would be a good idea to change my air filter every 15,000 - 20,000 to keep the MPG up!

Your dealer is full of bull.
That exact same filterminder is used industry wide on all types of diesel engines and is such a simple device that for it not to work it would have to be visably broken.
The reason it doesn't move for you is because your truck is stock and doesn't require the air a bombed one does. A filter that looks solidly plugged with dirt can be flowing fine and one that looks clean can be plugged. Looks don't mean jack and are an amateurish way to judge filter condition.

here's the link to the filter minder site. you should have your dealer call them and tell them how it should have been made.

Thanks for the help with my filter. I have never heard about putting silicon grease around the seal thats a good idea. I have never seen my filter minder move and I just rolled 100k today so does that mean I clean my filter to much?

Probably, most of us do. A couple of my diesel tractors have a sticker on the air filter that reads;
Do not open filter until the service filter light illuminates, to do otherwise is counterproductive.
When the light has come on and I service the filter the dust usually fills the entire space between the housing and filter, the filter pleats are entirely full.
Wish it made a difference but after cleaning they still run the same.
People think I'm crazy when I tell them my truck has 215k and I've only cleaned the K&N twice!
Like I said before don't open the airbox unless you intend to change or service the filter. All you are doing by peeking is risking a poor seal or introducing dust into the system.
