HOT Tranny

I Got a quick question... And don't laugh, I know nothing about this stuff... I was at a friends this weekend and we were talking about my truck ;D... He was telling me I
should take out the tansmission converter or maybe it was the converter Clutch (I think thats what he called it).. He said if you have it removed your tranny fluid will run thru the cooler all the time and not just when the temp gets hot. He said when the transmission gets hot it activates the clutch, opening it letting the fluid out to be cooled. Therefore your transmission will last longer due to lower temps.. ??? I know lower tranny temps are a good thing, but this sound a bit strange... What do ya think ??

Tommy

Re:HOT Tranny

Sure. Take out your torque converter. See how far you get. Your torque converter is what drives your transmission gears so to speak.

TommysBlue Please, lets start at the beginning.

Is your transmission HOT????

If so what temp is it?????

Is this under normal driving conditions??? Or do you pull 15,000 lbs over the mountains???

With out knowing the answer's to these questions you can't say "help it's hot" you can say what should I do? How to check? Should I, or should I NOT? These are the future mods. Bomb away.

Although Gary and big blue did answer it in the "best way" very good guys.

Lets take this to the next level. Thanks OverFueled
Re:HOT Tranny

Auto tranny temps in the 180-190* range are normal.

Re:HOT Tranny

If you do anything with yur converter it should be to replace it with a low stall billet. With that and synthetic fluid you should see around 100 degree less temps due to less stall/heat. Unless like Overfueled said yur maby draggin to much weight over too long of a step grade and not letting the converter clutch engage than it will get hot. Those converters are junk from the factory and have problems with heat even with the stock motor...

Just remember...Stall means slippage...Slippage gives you heat...And heat gives you burnt fluid, clutchs, bands and ending with hardparts {planets, pumps, drums}

But yes if your having issues with heat more info would help in the possible cause and repair solution...

Take Care,
FreightTrain Wayneo,

Re:HOT Tranny

Ok,OK... I guess what I should have asked is have you heard of this, is this something I should be looking into?? And I have no idea if my tranny runs hot or not because I have no gauges (yet).. I'm just fishing for whats the right thing to do. I pull my 10,000 lbs 5er some weekends, mostly flat ground. Two or three times per year we go on vacation, up-state newyork, Smokeys, etc, etc, other then that i'm a over the road guy, unloaded, driving about 50,000 miles a year.
That's why I got the diesel, in order to pack on the miles & to pull my 5er once and awhile.. I'm a naivest when it comes to the diesel trucks, I don't pretend to know much about the inner workings of the transmission or the diesel engine.. I read a lot of the forms within this web site so I can get a better understanding of what to look for, and what to do if something starts to go wrong. There's a lot of it I don't understand, but one thing I have learned about owning a Dodge Ram Diesel, is that their owners are passionate about their Trucks... Most of them are "GearHeads" (no offence intended) they want to share their experiences with you. I can be anywhere, and If there is a gear head within the "sound" of my truck, they come over and start talking gearhead stuff. I thinks its great, and when they find out I don't know much, they start telling me what I should be doing to make things run better, faster, more H.P, etc. Thats how I heard of the transmissions running hot and what I should be doing about it. He made it sound like everybody with a Dodge Ram Diesel is going to experience a heat problem with their transmissions.....

Tommy

Re:HOT Tranny

He's right. Anybody with an automatic that tows a heavy load will experience heat in these trannys. I suggest getting a transmission temp gauge.
