exhaust noise. how much?

i have about 260,000 mi on my factory muffler. i've heard many of u say to bring it out just before the rear tire. i've also seen pics of some yall's rigs that had stacks installed like wannadiesels and g1625s. i think that looks bad edit. i guess one of my questions is, how much louder will the exhaust be without the muff? also, will i notice any power difference? i also noticed that the pipes reduce down to smaller sizes at the entrance and exit of the muff which causes restriction. thanks for any info.

It's not much louder at idle, but when you get on it, watch out! It is loud.

The advice I always give guys who are tinking about straight piping their truck is this:
If you think it might be too loud for you, it will be.

You won't notice much change SOTP my losing the muffler. Spoolup will be better and EGT will drop, though.

It doesn't really sound much louder in the cab, but if you stand next to the pipe and have someone "accelerate rapidly", you will notice it's much louder. That, in combination with a 12cm housing, makes it a LOT of fun to drive with the passenger window down.

Oh, and like wannadiesel said, EGT's will "dorp" (i had to comment)

EGT is exhaust gas temperature - if you get too hot you end up melting a piston or other bad things. You'd have to ask others about the other effects of high EGTs, but melting a piston is the #1 reason to have a pyrometer in my opinion. Max preturbo EGT is 1250* sustained on these engines. If you're going to modify the truck much, you should get a pyrometer to measure EGT's.

Check out this site for more EGT (along with turbo) information: http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/turbo_faq.htm

SOTP = Seat Of The Pants.

If you aren't working the truck it's not likely you will damage it from high EGT with the mods you have in your sig.

Jeez, misspell one word in over 7,000 posts and the spelling police are all over ya.

That's not too bad, just take it easy towing until you get gauges. RPM is your friend, don't let it bog down.

I've got a couple videos coming with the straight pipe music provided you don't have dial-up internet. Here's one I did a little while ago: http://media.putfile.com/My-Truck

Here's another video comparing the 18cm housing to the 12: http://media.putfile.com/18cm-housin...s-12cm-housing

And another showing how loud the straight pipe is:

I must have a different truck. I put a 4 inch system behind my down pipe with a short glass pack exiting behind the back wheel and the low frequency drone is deafening. I drove it to the DC area Sunday and my ears rang most of the night. I am seriously thinking about adding another GP.
