excessive egts
excessive egts
i had my edge on level 6 "hot" the other day messing around with my brother in his duramax and dumped the clutch in 3rd. while blowing away my tires and the duramax my preset defuling alarm went off and i saw 1550 deg. my backdown is set at 1350. did i do any damage? maybe on it only 5-6 seconds. also why did the edge let the egts continue to escalate? what is going to happen when i hook to the sled this summer and give it all shes got for 20 seconds. is this safe?
First off, no damage done IMO. I'm no sledpuller, but if you saw 1550 empty, I'd say you will be doing some expensive repairs if you sledpull. Maybe you should get some kind of cooling mist device. There is a Napa liquid you can add to the water/Meth that's supposed to really help with rusting. Maybe a sledpuller will chime in and give you some advice. Good Luck.
thats what im wondering. I get 1450 F egt stock 0 setting and levels 1-6 get a lil worse but not much.gauges are on the way for me because im doubting edges auntethicity of their digital readout for boost and pyro.
I was told my a DODGE mechanic that stock we should see 1400 EASY because these 3rd gens run hotter and especially the 2004.5s and up because of the 3rd injection event that is meant to burn out catylyc converter. So for those of us who say 1400 F is TOO HIGH think again because if all you are seeing is 900 then i doubt it or you have 2 or 3 cylinders not firing.

All of the big three (ctd psd dmax) are not rated to withstand more than 1400* consistantly all day under load. 1450 for 5 minutes, 1500 for 2 minutes, etc....
Your truck is fine, its not really about temp, its just how long you hold it there. Drag racing or sled pulling at a really high temp for 20 seconds is not going to hurt anything. Cast iron is dense (especially the ctd, theres a lot of mass to heat up there) and it takes some time for the heat transfer from the 1600* exhaust gasses to do lots of damage.
Also, I would look into getting a real pyrometer. The Edge EGT guage is not known for being the most accurate in the world. Mine was not accurate at all (I had a real EGT guage hooked up alongside the Edge). My Edge is long gone, but I have heard people say similar things about the Edge not reading correctly, for both CTD's and dmax's.
1400* easy?? I dont know about that... How does this dealer tech have any idea what the EGT is or is supposed to be? These trucks dont have probes from the factory and measuring EGT as some diagnostic procedure isnt in any factory service manual that I know of.

I thought what I've read the edge doesn't and can't change the timing quick enough to regulate or allow lower egt's. That is only a parameter that a down loader, can change the fueling maps, so I've read. Where is the pyro probe located?

Just don't hold it up there for to long. You should be fine. I've also seen trucks with just a BDDL tap out a 1600 deg pyro.
i have been having egts probs from the start, i have been chasing it with everything see sig.* i installed my 62/12 and still hit 1500 the other day on a run. i ordered a 5in TB with no cat and a Smarty.* i put the smarty on and have more power and egts are at least 200-300 degrees cooler and i have not even put the exhaust on yet. programmers vary alot
when I was done a few times it took a couple seconds for it to come over the 1500 degree reading. You'll be fine but seriously on the street you shouldn't be getting that hot. I run the mods in my sig and have never seem over 1400?? SOme trucks just run different but that cam keeps it 200-300 degrees cooloer.
