cummins evolution

Questions from me to you that will answer.. From what I have gathered with the Cummins, Dodge marriage is that it began in the late 80's. Were there any motor changes from gen 1 trucks to gen 2 trucks up until the 24 valve? Was there revisions made with the 24 valve motors? Are the 24 valve gen 3 motors different from the 24 valve gen 2 motors? I plan on getting 6 inline one of these days. Hopefully sooner than later.. Thanks Tom

Re:cummins evolution

To be brief and I'll gave you a favorite link of mine that gives a lot of engine information. 1989 was the first year the Cummins was avaliable in the Ram. 1989 through 1998 featured the lovable mechincal 12-valve. Mid year through 1998, refered to as 1998.5 a new electronic 24 valve engine was introduced.

Many benefit from the mighty CTD.

If you’re looking for high mileage (longevity) the CTD is the one. Just ask anyone who has one.

If you’re looking to pull 18,000 lbs then CTD is the one.
Watch the road count the CTD over the others with trailers.
3 to 1 ratio

But and only but if you are looking to just have allot of FUN then the CTD is for YOU. ;D OverFueled
Re:cummins evolution

As far as hard parts go,, Rods, pistons, oil pumps, etc,, have only undergone MINOR revisions. The motor is still 359C.I. 6-cylinders inline, turbo charged, direct injected, and a Dodge warrentied 100,000 miles. Until the '03 year, the rebuild interval was 400,000 miles, and the motor is rated as a Medium duty Diesel motor.

The '89-'93 year had a mechanical, rotary style VE pump. Not much power was left in these pumps, but with some tuning, they can make 400 RWHP.

The '94-'98.4 yead had the, mechanical P-7100 pump.
Lots of room for power,, Easily adjustable, good mileage, and with work can flow TONS of fuel.
They can flow enough fuel to support 1,000+HP, you just need the air.

The '98.5-'02 year had the electronic VP44, nothing mechanical can be done to this pump by the general public to increase fueling, but, there are a good variety of add-on boxes to increase HP (up to 120HP on a stock truck). This pump can support over 700HP.

The '03+ trucks have a version of the VP44, called a CP3, like the VP44, nothing mechanical can be done to this pump by the general public, but add-on boxes are allready plentifull,, so far, upwards of 140 additional HP. This pump will flow as much fuel as the VP44, but is even more fragile than the VP44.

Hope this helps you out.
