cranky and hard to start

Saturday my truck decided it would be hard to start. I have noticed no real problems of this sort until then. Engine was warm, temp 65 deegrees, it turned over maybe 3-4 seconds and then fired, it also idled roughly. Sunday evening it was worse, same hard start and bad miss at idle, It took 30-40 seconds to smooth out. It got progressively worse everytime I started until I had to hold the pedal down to get it to start and get the revs up. Seemed to run fine once it started though, It missed a little at a light one time.

This morning I ordered a replacement for the crusty orginal looking lift pump, I'm going to check all the lines for possible cracks while I'm in there.

Anybody else have any suggestions what might be causing this?

Check your fuel lines if you haven't already. Mine rotted out right after the tank sending unit, behind the frame. Couldn't tell it was leaking unless I stuck mt head up by the tank and looked between it and the frame. Lost almost a 1/4 tank to that one, and she was hard starting. Could be drawing air from somewhere.

Well its not been hard starting lately. Its been firing the first rotation. It now sometimes misses at idle, and misses more severly if load is increased. I'm prolly not going to work on it until friday.

G16 do you have to pull the fuel tank to inspect those other lines

Have you tried turning the idle speed up slightly?

It is possilble that you could have algae growing in the tank. try running some D100 diesel treatment in your tank
