Can a flywheel be resurfaced?
Can a flywheel be resurfaced?
Just trying to save as much money as I can without being"cheap". I talked to Peter at Southbend and I can get just a clutch disc for $150.00 or for $375.00 I can get a clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing and input bearing.
My trannyman says my pressure plate looks real good. There is one very small groove. He said I could have my pressure plate cut down a .001 or so and possibly do the same to my flywheel, therefore saving me hundreds of dollars. Money is real tight for me right now while my getrag is being rebuilt. Can the flywheel be cut down? Need to hear some opinions quick so I can make a decision and get the parts coming so I can put it back together this weekend. Thank you very much guys for all the questions you anwer for me. Matt.

Peter was a great help to me today. He was the only person I talked to that was able to sell me just the parts I needed, not the whole clutch kit. I probably would have bought the kit but money is just to tight for me right now. $600.00 for a kit is just more than I can afford after tranny went bad.

When we put the clutch in my dad's 95' sombody tried to tell us that the flywheel was supposed to have a taper to the surface, high at the center and taper to the outer edge. I told them they where full of bologna!!! We had it resurfaced flat and have not had any trouble. Do make sure the hydralic throwout setup is functioning properly. That is what took out the first clutch we put in dad's 95'. It would hold tight in 1st 3 gears and you could slip the heck out of it in 4th and 5th. Maybe 1st gens don't have that trouble. Just wanted to Throw that out there! good luck!

bought an upgraded clutch for dads dmax thru south bend and peter was great to work with i really love his written instruction told me what size wrench to use. now when it come to metrics that really helps this farm boy. a dmax has a two piece flywheel that is non machineable we went with the new single piece flywheel. i to have heard of the conical finish on these flywheels.
The conical finish is to help eliminate chatter when releasing the clutch. So when the clutch is release it slipps just a c-hair instead of trying to bite down right away causing chatter. It wont hurt anything machining it flat and I don't know of anyone who can machine a conical finish. The shop I used to work at had a flywheel grinder and I have machined over a 100 flywheels from Chevy sprints up to Dump trucks and rigs. Never had one come back.
Good luck with your truck.

i have done at least 20 to 30 flywheels on the brake drum lathe where i used to work. (they were all company owned vehicals trust me.) and if they had hard spots we just used the grinder attachments. most flywheels were out of 72 gmc 427 cu in line trucks.
