buy rebuilt pump or hot rod mine

I went by the diesel pump shop today to talk about my pump with him. My 180 pump has 235,000 unmolested miles on it. This is the truck I'm fixin to hot rod a little. Shop owner said for 800 exchange he can open up a 215 pump to do everything I should want to do. Would this be a better way to go instead of buying a plate, governor springs, and paying someone to retime my pump? Can the pump be turned up on the bench to supply say 400 to 450 without a plate and around 3300 on governor with factory parts? Price will be close plus I am getting a fresh pump. Any help would be appreciated.

Almost all of the time unless a pump is leaking allot of oil or a has a Governor issue it's fine, if all your wanting is Gov Springs and a plate your looking at $330, add $100 for the Big Valve springs, add $400 for 370 injectors and now your at plasma torch EGT's and need a bigger turbo........think more about what power level you want to be at and how much of that do you want to be useable power, then look at (no sig here) if you an auto or manual. Auto your past what the stock one will handle, stick your past the stock clutch.

I just bought this 97 and am going to modify it before I start driving it. It runs out real good for the miles on it but it has never pulled anything at all, heck the overloads have never rubbed on the rubber blocks enough to mark them. I didn't know how much wear the pump would have in it and if it was the right setup for a plate and governer springs. I'm going to do the trans. in the next two wks. and order the other parts at this time to. With pump timing a 10 plate and governor springs and injectors it should be good for aleast 350 to 400 I hope. I'm looking at either a 35-40 hybrid or the stock 35 teamed up with the ht3e I bought last fall. Looking for a towing combo that will run good to and keep down exhaust temps. You know how bombing goes, I'm looking to do this truck only once, learned my lesson buying injectors and boxes for my 01. Any help would be appreciated!

Have a buddy with all the mods you speak of on a '97, ht3e turbo, EDM injectors, no pump work except the plate, GSK and softer AFC spring. It tows great but will smoke a bit if you put your foot into it.
