#53 block?

#53 block?
I just read something in another thread about a #53 block being undesireable. What is the problem with it? When was it used? Was it made at a certain time or a certain factory or what?
Moderators. I hope this is ok in this forum. I wasn't sure if it was a 24v problem or if it was with 12v too. If you feel it should be somewhere else please move it.

It's more of a 24 valve problem though some '98 12 valves also have the 53.
What do you do anyway, sell your truck?
About the only good I can see from even checking to see what you have is before you buy the truck. Otherwise it just gives you something to worry about that likely won't be a problem.

From what I've read
It was used from 98-01. They are made in Brazil I think. They are known to crack. Especially under heavy towing.
My buddy has a 99 that had the block crack @ 220 k miles, with heavy towing.
Some people have had theirs crack, some haven't.
Basically, when I buy my truck I'm going to crawl underneath to make sure its not a 53 series block. If I don't, I think I will have a hard time sleeping at night.
