5 Sp wont start scenario
5 Sp wont start scenario
OK, heres what happens sometimes. When starting the truck, pushing in the clutch to the floor.........clicks, one time, no cranky. Let the clutch out, depress again,.........click, no cranky.
Now, I have had this happen before, ended up being the battery cables loose. So I go out and check the cables and tighten them up more.. Get back in and it starts..........problem solved...........until last nite.
Same thing again press clutch, click, no cranky. Pop the hood, recheck the cables, cables are ok. Get back in and it starts.
NOW, when I get home, I try to get it to not start and this is what I found out. When I push in the clutch to the floor, and it clicks but wont crank, if I move the clutch pedal out some, away from the floor, it starts?
What would cause this ?
I know there is a neutral safety switch or something of the like, so you cant start it in gear with the clutch out, but what is going on with what I have described to you?

It sounds to me like the Neutral safety switch might be going bad. They are basically a n/o (normally open) contact and when you depress the clutch they go to n/c (normally closed) which completes the electrical path. The contacts inside the switch might be dirty or worn. I'm not sure if that is a sealed unit or not. You could take the switch out and see if it will come apart and if so check the contacts. If its a sealed unit you might just want to replace it.
Hope this helps

Sounds like a clutch switch. Not too bad to change. I don't think you can tear it apart and clean it up but maybe.
Lay on your back under the column and look at the clutch rod above the pedal. The barrell looking thing on the clutch rod is the switch. Pop the plastic clip off the barrell and the switch will slide off the rod. IIRC a new clip comes with the switch if you break it. I have reused them many times before though.
Don't forget to unplug the switch either.

Find the clutch switch.
Skin both wires above the switch.
Twist the naked wires together.
Wrap with good old black tape.
You will not ever be bothered with a bad clutch-switch again.
Only a gourd-head would try to start a truck in gear; just remember to not let any gourd-heads start your truck and you will be fine.

It's not working but I think that's because of a bad park break switch ground. (park break warning light is very dim)
I havent made time to look yet, but isnt that the 2 big red wires that you twist together? I remember to red wires when changing over cabs that were together, in that area. I have to change fluids tomorrow, if I get a chance, I'll look into it. I also have never tried to start it in gear, maybe be a quick finding out if the switch is connected or wired together....
I'll post what, if anything I find.

The clutch safety switch circuit is small wire- 16-18ga, IIRC. I scotch locked mine together when I converted it back to key starting (more fixing up the P.O.'s mix ups)- I have too much slack in my clutch pedal rod to let it work like it should.

Anybody doing the clutch switch mod, just remember: It WILL start in 1st or 2nd gear depending on your rear ratio, wether the clutch is in or not. And depending on what surface it was parked on, continue to move through whatever is in it's path, be that a garage wall or most any other object, for that matter!
I haver not tested this. Yet.
