2000 knock'n-Let the fun begin

I have a friend that has an excellent opportunity to buy a truck that's owner let get low of oil due to a front seal leak. If my friend trades for the truck he wants to build it and not have to worry about any Duramaxes getting the best of him. He asked me for help and I told him I would ask the ones who knew. So, the motor will be disassembled and checked out and in our minds we're thinking in the neighborhood of 600+ hp as a goal using stock internals. Light towing from time to time but mainly the goal is a sleeper in sloths clothing that will blister some asphalt. If our goal is too lofty for stock internals, adjust as needed. We need to know what can be used in stock parts and what needs to be upgraded. In short we dont know the weaklinks in the engine. It is a stick and clutch / pp suggestions needed as well. TIA

-Gauges
-5" exhaust
-Some sort of Twin Turbo setup
-12mm Head studs
-Custom Injectors, F-1's seem to be pretty good
-P-Pump or Redline box(just dont leave it on all the time), something smaller to stack on the Redline so when you are just cruising turn off the redline.
-FASS 150 or I like my Haisley aux fuel system
-Cam, opptional, however advised
-Some sort of Drag Twin Clutch
These are goin to get pretty expensive so have your check book ready. This should make around 600hp pretty easy and will be sick.

the weak links are the injection pump and lift pump . if i was building one up like this i would really look at building it with a hrvp 44 and a fass fuel pump . then a hot edge with attuide a set of mach 6 injecters from don m and a sled puller 66 from htt . this should get you to 600hp for the clutch i would look a eep double disk pulling clutch or a south bend iron giant .

No affence, but I think he would have a little trouble cooling that with just a SP66. And how much does a HRVP 44 add.

As far as I know the internals of the big C are pretty stout. I haven't heard of anyone going into the bottom end because of hugh HP. The headgasket is a different story. As far a I know the HRVP will only give a SO some bottom end, no more peak HP than a regular SO pump.

The internals will hold a lot of power. All you need is peripherals:

Redline box ($1500) stacked with a Smarty ($600), Mach 5 injectors ($1200?), small twins ($2500) or a big single ($1500), 5" exhaust ($450) and a good aftermarket intake ($300). You'll need a dd clutch $2500) and a good fuel pump ($100-500).

This will set you back around $10,000.

The only internal I would look into would be pistons. In Diesel Power they had a CTD at 1100 hp and running 6k rpm and they used the stock crank and rods. Twins is a good start and some big sticks will work the fuel problem. If I were you switch to a P pump and that will help.

I am building an engine right now and they are taking the entire thing apart to check seals and everthing inside. While they are there they are fire ringing and studs plus all springs and retainers. 2 or 3 of the pistons are going to be replaced and cylenders will be honed. All in all it is going to cost around $7k. So that is a very close ball park (minus twins) of what you are going to do. Hope this helps. Oh and def get a built trans or a good clutch or that pwoer will never get to the ground!

Thanks a bunch, guys. I failed to mention that my friend had been told it would cost 18,000.00 to rebuild the engine back stock. I told him just get the truck that I had a STRONG feeling that was way off. Thanks again

Yup. Way off. Here's my plan for 600+hp:

TST/Smarty Stack
Mach 6's
KSB-1/B2 or Big brother twins
12mm studs
Stage 3 ported head
Fire rings
Helix 2 or 3 cam
12v mechanical lift pump
Stock VP44 injection pump
4" straight pipe to 5" stacks
DTT Full Billet Tranny

For your buddy just replace the DTT trans with a Dual Disk from Peter at Southbend Clutch. That combo right there should net you 600+ very easily and very reliably.

You can see in my sig what I have and am making. The only upgrade for internals is a mainstud kit from haisley which was suggested because of the RPM's the engines spinning.

Thanks. After 9,232 posts you'd figure I'd learn something. I just hope I'm alive long enough to see that combo come into play.
