PSM airbox mod????

Im thinking about doing this mod to the airbox. Its where you cut a 4" hole in the bottom of your airbox and drop a piece of 4" pipe down to catch the cold air.

I have done lots of searching on here about the subject, but I have not gotten the answer to a couple questions.

For those with experience on this mod...Does it actually help? Does it make the turbo whistle any louder? Or is it just a waste of time? The reason I want to do this is cause I have a few other mods, but still have the stock airbox(although its gutted and silencer ring is gone) and the filter minder gets sucked into the red when I get on it or when I tow heavy.

Any comments on this would be appreciated. For those who are gonna say to just buy an intake...I know I can do that, but I dont want to spend $200-$400 if I can get the same result cheaper.TIA

06Mega, I appreciate the offer but I want to keep the stock airbox in there for now. I just want to mod it alittle to maybe get some more airflow...If it doesnt work, I may take you up on the offer.

I have it with an Amsoil drop in and a AFE Torque Tube. I like the setup and yes it will help a little with egt's. Would do it again in a heartbeat instead of all these other intakes on the market...

RRC, What about the sound? I removed the silencer ring and gutted the intake tube. Will the turbo noise change at all, or will it stay quiet?

Will not change the noise.

I just bought a 4" flexable dryer hose for around eight bucks. Enough for two setups.

My filter minder would suck into the red before I modified the stock air box, now with the extra snorkle it never moves.

WELL WORTH IT.

I have no EGT issues, even towing heavy through the mountains.

Better keep it out of the water. anything much over 4-6" deep at any speed and you'll be sucking water.

I don't know where you are located. But I did the 4inch hole and the dryer vent on the oem filter box and it plugged solid in a snow storm. I then went to the BHAF system and I have seen the front portion of the filter plugged with snow but there was enough area that was not plugged that allowed me to keep going. Believe me you do not want to have to get out of your truck to clean snow out of the air filter when it is snowing so hard that those behind you can't see.

If you're replying to me, I can tell you that it is not any worse than the stock opening from the wheel well.

I'm in San Diego, CA. Not much snow here. I have heard many folks tell a story about snow packing the stock air box through the stock opening. I have added screen material to both openings to keep big stuff out, including snow. The mod works for me. My EGTs never exceed 1200*.

Hello: Do you have any pics of your set up? I'm interested in getting more air into my CD and I'm using the Amsoil Ea Nano and I'm also interested in keeping EGT's down during towing too.

Thanks,
Dave

i have the psm on several of our trucks and like it. you are making some false assumptions on some things. there are some white nylon fins in the bottom elbow of the oem tube, they are straightening vanes and they act with the silencer ring to reduce side shear in the turbo. to get peak efficiency out of your turbo at cruising speed restore all items to oem if you tow there is a more efficient straightening vane called a tag. the psm, cool hose and tag is the tops if you tow or drive long distance. a cfm+ and grid heater delete will help reduce compressor load also

I have the PSM,cool blue hose and Trueflow Drop in....with an aftermarket turbo...no regrets, would do it again w/o hesitation......only down side is previously mentioned water (granted, i had to hit a deep puddle at 50mph to get it too occur)....no noise issues, egt's are legit (before and after aftermarket turbo), no pulling down the filterminder.....GO FOR IT.

I've had the psm in from new. It works great. The only reservation I have is going through deep Baja moondust. I think if I went,I'd pull the tube and just work with the flange opening. A ladies stocking might work just as well also. After you get back on the road, you could throw the stocking away. No more noise which is fine by me. I'm using the PG7 oiled dropin.
