If you are planning on leaving your exhaust system stock, a cold air kit won't help much. If you're planning on doing some exhaust mods, then it will help the breathing of the beast quite a bit. I've already asked these questions, and was told by a dealer for one of the cold air intake kits, that it would be a waste of money without changing the exhaust.
Hope this helps.

Thats a good point. The EGR system is working to increase the intake air temperature on the engine so any improvements in cool air to the engine are lost with the EGR active.

You're right. Unplugging the EGR does help that cause, but it was on a stock system here. The Cool Hose from DPP also looks like a good upgrade if you are looking for cooler charge air.

Haven't been able to confirm yet.. But when I first downloaded the DTC's from the ECM there was a code for a "torque level 2" which is a de-rate that was indicated in the Smarty release notes from having the EGR unplugged. I am going to plug it back in and zero the codes and monitor..

I had it unplugged and the S67 only read 1 code which I believe was P0405 that has to do with the EGR circuit being low...
I've heard that others have confirmed that the S67 takes care of the EGR doing anything so I went ahead and plugged it back in and cleared the 1 code.
Can't tell anything with the MPG yet, but it would be great if anybody that knows could confirm. Might have to actually call MADS myself.

Pluggin in the EGR makes a big difference.
The timing clatter that I thought I heard was nothing like when the EGR is plugged in. The engine still does a de-rate with the EGR motor unplugged as it was stated in the ME software notes.
I can now tell that its going through a regen as the diesel clatter goes away and the pipe temp is up. Interesting.
