6.7 - is it worth it?

After reading numerous threads on the 6.7 emission problems, I still can't make up my mind. Since the truck will be used exclusively for towing a fifth wheel, less than dozen times a year, I had been looking for a 5.9, MC, 4x4 SLT with low mileage. There have been a few good deals to surface here in So. Cal., however I was slow in pulling the trigger. For the most part, the price range is 25-28k with less than 40k miles.

Today, I located a new '08 for $29.5k, with another 4k in tt&l. Moreover, once I add in the credit for the exhaust brake, the mileage and the additional time provided with the new the warranty it narrows the price gap with the 5.9to less than zero.

Despite being somewhat mechanically inclined, at a glance the 6.7 engine looks more intimidating or confusing than the 5.9. Therefore when you talk about honing turbo flanges, and butterfly valves, fool boxes, DPF and CAT modifications, and the like, I sense that it might be over my head. And having to purchase the "right" kit or modification and code readers could be a pain in the rear.

Additionally I don't have any friends or neighbors that are motor heads, and I don't care for the thought of having to go into the dealership on a regular basis. Nor do I want to have to change things back every time, before going into to see the dealer.

However, the Dealership Service Poll was insightful in that things might not be as bad as the rants and raves. What's really confusing, is the wide variety of issues you've had with these engines, and that a pin point solution has yet to be provided.

That said, I suspect that some modifications will be necessary, what would it take to make the most basic mods? And should I go for the 6.7???

I'm really enjoying my truck, and at 7,100 miles its been to the dealer for an oil change, and that's it. The truck runs great, tows outstanding, and is fun to drive. I'd buy it again. Good luck with your quest.

My 6.7L is awesome ! The availbility of parts from Chrysler is awful !
It's a super truck to drive, when they get the DPF deal all figured out , all will be good.
I beleive that they ( Dodge) will make a change to some parts and a service schedule change which will result in making the DPF system work fine.
good luck !

Where to start!!! I LOVE mine and have no regrets, but would not want to have all the emissions on it. I have deleted DPF, PCV and EGR and it makes the truck an entirely new animal. But you need to drive it. If you are planning on letting it sit, or just toying around town here and there you will most likely spend lots of time at the dealer with them telling you to take it out and drive it hard for about 45 minutes to get it to REGENERATE the DPF. If you want it to run like crazy, and it WILL, you will have to do the DPF, EGR delete and WILL need to R&R every 2 years because they will be starting testing in 2010.
All this being said, I am happy to for the performance I am getting and I love driving it. Since I did the deletes, I have never had an issue with a check engine light at all.
List: 5" turbo back w/ DPF delete kit will run you around $1000 give or take.
EGR delete, just check forums and you can easily do this yourself.
Edge juice with ATT monitor, gives you gauges, power and clears codes on start up. $900.

Totally worth it to me, but don't plan on emissions going away.
P.S. 68rfe 6speed auto tranny is great when you get used to it. My friend got a 6.7 mega cab long bed conversion and pulls a 45 foot toy hauler and says it loves the tighter gear spacing.
Let us know what you decide.

I have a late '07 bought in January '08 and currently have 15K on the clock. My only mod (other than brake controller and B&W turn-over) has been the Edge insight for gauges. My truck has not been back to the dealer once. My general miantnence is done by an independant shop that services all of my vehicles. I love the truck but hate the fuel mileage. Pulls so much better than my 2nd gen. If it wasn't for the 6 sp auto I would not have even considered the 6.7. If I had to do it over I would but the same truck with out hesitation. I pull heavy and light as well as empty. Probably 20% heavy, 30% light to medium and 50% light to empty.

I have a little over 8000 miles on my '08 MC and have not had any problems.(Knock on wood!!!!) It's only been to the dealer for an oil change. I see a DPF and other emissions deletes happening SOON!!!!! I will let everyone know as soon as I get them done!!!!! In response to your question, in my opinion the 6.7 IS worth it!!! Good Luck!!! Im going to go ahead and strap on the flame suit now... Yes the 6.7's run great when you put the all the deletes on and it seems to me that its a crap shoot if you get a good truck with no issues that keeps all of its emissions equip intact. So by chance you do get a 6.7 and it is one of those trucks that throws 9 codes a day due to emissions equip going haywire. Your going to be swapping stuff out everytime you need to go and get your sniffer test done (which you stated you do NOT want to do). And with you only driving the truck on a seldom basis I would think that this could increase the chances of things. I am NOT discrediting the 6.7 one bit, as myself have been thinking of going and getting one, but I would do the deletes as this type of stuff does not bother me. But for you maybe not risking getting a truck that hates its emissions stuff isnt worth the headache. Maybe a 5.9 with no exhaust equip is a better fit for you. If you towed more often or planned on using the truck more, Id say go for the new 6.7 But in your case my votes for the ol 5.9

Actually, this sounds very reasonable.

Haven't had any problems with mine except a blown right door speaker.

Given the huge discounts new trucks are selling for now, if you can swing it why keep an old one? I figure it's a pretty good opportunity.

http://www.dodge.com/en/lifetime_powertrain_warranty/

the new lilimited lifetime warrantee for original owner dating back to july of '07

i have just over 4k miles on my 5500, no problems so far and i really don't expect any. the dealer i use has very good diesel mechanics and with the new lifetime warrantee i feel confident that i made the right choice.

i would recommend an '08 (late production if possible) for the discounts given (they of course started after i bought mine) the '09's should be out soon.

FAQ #3 from the linked page: http://www.dodge.com/en/lifetime_pow...ranty/faq.html

<LI class=ques>Q3: What powertrain parts and components are covered? A3: Gasoline engine, transmission and drive systems (FWD, AWD, RWD or 4WD).

I was told when I bought mine that diesel engines are not covered.

It is worth it for me after I modded the truck...
DPF Delete and EGR Block

Now I get the mileage and power of the 04.5 5.9L and the smooth shifting 6 Speed Auto and Exhaust break of the 08 6.7L

For me it is the best of both worlds which is exactly what I wanted.
