new cummins pistons and rings where a bit over $2000 for my buddys 05, plus the labor. here they charge $600 (dls) for a complete engine overhaul, i believe it`d be more expensive in usa

guys...thanks for all the info....here are some more details.
The '05 engine only has 30,000 miles on it!!!! Im having trouble convincing my uncle who runs or shop that this is the way to go. We dont have much time...the kid wants to make the swap by this weekend. It dosent look like its going to happen.
I bought this truck used, it had 115,000 on it. It came out of Texas. The truck was extremely clean and ran great. It still does run great...thats the funny thing. Im not sure what the previous owner had on the truck, although im pretty sure he had a box of some type because the mount is still glued to the windshield. Right now the truck has the stock air filter in it. The previous owner also did the exhaust mod.
The truck currently has 125,000 on it, and like I said, it still seems to be running fine with no loss of power.

What I don't understand is that if the motor were shot and oil was spitting out the fill cap and dipstick tube it should also be blowing out the blow-by tube like crazy. I get the impression it is not. Am I correct? If there is that much pressure in the crankcase you would have oil shooting out the blow-by tube. Have you taken the tube off? Sometimes they are clogged and you can't see or if it has been re-routed and made out of heater hose, the insides can narrow like a clogged artery.
The oil return line usually exits from the bottom of the turbo between the intake and exhaust housing. Sometimes they come out of the block or crack and dump oil everywhere.
What concerns me though, is the notion that no oil would come out the blow-by tube but would come out the fill cap.

Oh...now I do get it. Then that is a lot of pressure in there. WOW. I misunderstood. I take it your oil level is dropping? If the level is not dropping an injector is bad. If it is blowing out oil, I would imagine that whatever mods the previous owner had has accelerated wear on the rings or melted something. Which doesn't help much, but I hope you can find a good solution to your problem there.

I remember a neighboring farm had a tractor and they found the dipstick (one with the clamp down rubber seal) out on the ground. They put it back in and tightened it down. The tractor sounded and ran fine, but as soon as you put a load on the engine, it would launch the dipstick like a bottle rocket.
The thing turned out to have broken rings, which let a bunch of pressure into the crank case, especially once the plows were dropped into the ground.
Anyway, I think semis can have engine health tested by measuring blow by while on a chassis dyno... Can a similar test be done for a pickup?

hey guys, looks like im going to try and swap engines with that '05. I've got mine out, but before i start pulling the other one i had a few more questions.
The '05 is an automatic....will this cause me any problems??
I have heard that on the 2nd gens, turbo sizing was different from an automatic to a standard...one spooled faster than the other. I called the dealer, they said all turbos in '04 where the same regardless of transmission type and all turbos in '05 were the same regardless of transmission type. They couldn't tell me if they were different from '04 to '05. Imagine that.
Also, should i worry about the ECM? Im assuming the ECM somehow manages the shift points in the automatic...I dont think it's very hard to swap ECM's, should I just swap to be on the safe side??
Other than swaping flyweels, would there be any other differences mating the standard engine to the auto trans or mating the auto engine to the standard trans???
Any answers are greatly appreciated, also any heads up on other differences I may have overlooked are also welcome!!!
