98 24V Burning excessive oil and hard start
Got a couple questions about our truck.
1998 24V
1st Problem: Hard Start
Very hard to start, even when warm outside. Intake heater seems to work fine (hot to the touch). You have to turn it over for at least 30-45sec minimum before it starts. Then it idles very rough and billows smoke (smells like fuel). If you give it a little throttle, you might hear a few backfires before it leans out and smoothes out. Seems to me like its burning off excess fuel in the engine thats building up when its cranking and not starting.
Replaced Crankshaft Pos Sens, going to replace Camshaft Pos Sens tomorrow. My best guess is that the timing is off when its cranking and cranking and not starting until it finally fires.
2nd Problem: Burning Excessive oil
Losing oil bad. Took a 2 hr trip, with a decent load and was almost a gallon low when we got there. Needless to say, we were stopping more often on the way back. Runs great when full of oil, obviously, not sluggish. No drips in the driveway. With no load on truck, it still looses a lot of oil, but not as quickly.
Thanks for the help.

For the hard start, it could be loosing its prime. Have you done any fuel sys. maintenance lately? filter change etc. As for the oil issue, i do not know. Someone might chime in with some suggestions.

Don't think the cam sensor has any affect on the timing. My manual says that it is only used for diagnostics. Do you have any codes? Hard starting and excessive oil use are usually caused by worn rings.

Could be your problem.

Check turbo bearings.
Is your tailgate covered in crud? If not, it's not a leak.
A whole gallon? It should show up somewhere... Good luck

Did replace fuel filter recently.
It throw a couple codes, I will post those when I get home.
Yeah, I meant backfire sounds. That would be lack of fuel? I sure hope its not the inj pump.
Gallon low? Yes. Actually about 3- 3 1/2 qts. Problem is, the pressure gauge never dropped. Thats why we didn't realize until we got there. Since then, I haven't driven it that much and keep it topped off.
No crud on tailgate. I cleaned the engine compartment last night, so I might be able to identify where its coming from.
A friend suggested the rings. I have a feeling thats what we're going to have to do. Does anyone know of a DIY online on that, I just want to make sure there aren't any hidden surprises once I tear into it.
Thanks again.

Sounds to me like your rings are worn bad. Hard starts and excessive burning of oil are both symptons of worn rings. By the way how many miles have ya got on her and what type of oil have ya been running?
Good luck,

177K, but, its been used and abused. We use it almost 100% of the time now, but the owner, in the past, has not been the most caring towards his equipment.
Since I don't own it, I've been using good ol' Super Tech. Not the best idea, but its been cheaper.

I had a truck burning alot of oil like yours. Mine ended up being a turbo, And prolly what urs would be if I had to guess. Take of your air to air hose and see if there's a buncha oil in there. At 177,000 I hardly believe anything is worn out unless it's been run it's whole life without an airfilter.

Super tech diesel right? not gasser oil I hope.... I ask because I have never seen "supper tech" oil for diesel here.

If you have a blown seal in the turbo it could be the problem. Especially if the previous owner failed regular fitler changes, shut down too soon (hot), etc. Turbos are tough but not bullet proof when abused.

As for the hard start 2 things, Fist overflow valve on the fuel return line out of injection pump, or your losing prime via a bad fuel line or loose connection somewhere.
As for oil burnig ,first look at your turbo might need bearings and seals, might pull pressure side pipe off between intercooler should be clean and dry if oilly I would look at turbo before I tear into piston rings.
Also a compression check would be in order before teardown. 1 gallon leak in 200 miles would be very visable on the undercarriage.

not sure about the oil issue, but a fuel leak, as stated before, will cause hard starts. Our farm pickup ('94 PSD, I know, I know ...glad I own a CTD ) had a TERRIBLE time starting, same as you stated, lots of turns before firing...found a fuel leak...problem fixed...starts like a champ now.
