Hi everyone, I am wanting to get my transfer case fluid changed out and am wanting a little help. I have not done this before but i know apparently its very simple. my question is, in the pic below, do I unscrew #2 (drain plug???) and let it all drain out and then unscrew & refill in the #1 plug (refill plug???). Is it that easy? I believe you use just over 2 quarts? I already have some mopar atf+4 ready to be used. Thanks everyone in advance...

Also, Do i basically just refill the fluid up to the bottom of the fill hole? pretty much like the differentials?

 

Yep.Remove both, drain, replace bottom, fill to bottom of top port. ATF 4. Tighten bolts to 30-40 Ft-lbs.

make sure you have the allen in all the way as to not strip the plug out

 

It's also a good idea to take the fill plug out 1st just in case it is stuck. Would suck to drain it and then be able to fill it again.

One note the rear end. Later trucks have an oil level line stamped into the cover. You could miss it if you didn't know it was there. Fill line is a fair bit below the bottom of the plug.

 

How do you know when you have reached this line when filling?????

 

RE: Rear Diff -- Stick your pinky finger in the fill hole. If you can touch oil (by bending your finger downward to "reach it"), it's full enough.

 

On the rear, just fill it till it starts to run out. Despite what some people have posted, it will cause no harm. I have over 40k on my rear will no issues.

Good advice on pulling the fill plug first on the t-case.

 

The manuals state to fill the rear to 1/4" below the hole, plus or minus 1/4". So, in reality, it's a wash. Anything from 1/2" below the hole to filling until it runs out is A-OK and within spec.

I did the rear diff on Sunday. I used 3.8L of Mobil 1. The reusable gasket makes the job super easy.

 

You will need a 10mm Allen socket bit /wrench in order to remove the drain and fill plugs.
